Why stop at six?
If cars were like pc cd roms (remember the X which the number in front of 'X' was a multiple of the standard data rate of the compact disc?)

In which case car transmissions would have no less than 32 speeds forward and probably a few reverse. Transmissions made in China to be affordable with gears made of nylon oxygen!

Of course all that's needed is two cones and a belt and you have infinite speeds available. ;)

Unfortunately, CVT's have power limits, I'm not aware of a single passenger car CVT that exceeds 300 ft-lbs, and you can beat 300 ft-lbs with a good large V6 these days. I know there's a hydraulic derived CVT, I think in a tank, but that's expensive and heavy fro a car.

I actually had thought of recently... if you take a car with a six auto, and bolt in a mere two speed auto behind it, you could have 12 gears. :awe: But with the improvements of CVT's, this idea comes in a decade or two late.

My parents own a Yukon XL, otherwise known as a Suburban. It's 18' long, 8' wide, 6.5' tall, weighs 5300 lbs, has 335 HP, and gets about 14/18 MPG. With the third row seats removed, and the second row flattened down, an 8'x4' sheet of plywood fits in the back with just a couple inches to spare. Anything longer than a 10' board (remember Pythagorean) goes across the seats to the dashboard, or on the roof, or out the rear glass.

The Yukon Denali is the one I REALLY want but that won't happen due to gas mileage.

You must be one of the few people left who likes the looks of Acuras. :p

As a sporty option, Acura is falling further behind, IMO. They're not as bad as Toyota/Lexus, but still.

I would never buy a toyota. I would rather buy an Nissan.

Electric drive like a train.
Slap a 12 cylinder diesel in there. Should be good for half a megawatt or more. That can run electric motors, hydraulic pumps, etc. Step up to eight wheels, each one driven, and put about 100-150 hp on each one. Should get you through anything.

A standard Yukon will not accommodate full sheets of plywood inside.

I don't haul that much plywood and certainly wouldn't haul huge sheets of it. The last time I got plywood I had them cut an 8 X 4 sheet in half because for my project, two 4 x 4 sheets worked perfectly.

The main thing we would haul is stuff for the yard.

Why not?
It will be reliable and not pissy like your tiny displacement engines.
The weight is already ridiculous I mean a tiny car that weighs 1500kg to move a 55kg person, come on!

Reliability is just fine on a modern car too. We don't need 10k HP/ft-lbs, and we don't need million plus mile endurance.

Come up with a better solution for -5 Celsius, 10 MPH wind, snow, rain, and ice transport that can carry a person safely, comfortably, along with a few bags of groceries or a bookbag.

Stuff for the yard being... shovels? Bags of mulch? Lattice for a trellis? Small potted plants? A block of peat?
