So my winter tires have a height difference of about 2/32", which seems to be less than 1% of the total height of the tires.

Hell, I still can't figure out if the AWD engages for 0-15 MPH, or only for slippage, or only when both conditions are met.

My initial thought was the tires with more tread go on the front, under the slightly heavier end of the car, and under the end that does more braking.

Let's see... cornering. In winter, oversteer becomes more a factor. Increased lateral rear traction reduces oversteer. On snow, that means higher tread. On clear road, it probably means the opposite, lower tread.

Starting off on clear road, less tread under the back means less squirm, more contact, better traction. Starting off through snow, more tread under the back will be better, but if I'm driving on snow, I'll put it into snow mode, which will likely activate the AWD from all stops, and thus it becomes irrelevant.

For stopping, in the clear, it doesn't much matter. On snow, putting higher tread tires on the rear should mean the rear stops better, which may create imbalance due to higher rear bias. Thus, put it on the front, and it'll mean if there is any tampering with the brake bias, it is towards the front, which is not a harmful thing.

Oh yes, under acceleration, the weight balance shifts... actually, I think it goes to 50/50 F/R when accelerating. Under braking, the weight balance loads the front. Under regular conditions, the weight balance is slightly forwards.

I'm looking forwards to taking my Hakkas out in snow, but that does not mean I am eager to remove my A/S tires.
