I think you can remove even that hard return. The way Windows renders it it seems there's a lot of white space above the symbol in the character itself. But maybe you should leave it as it just in case. Still, it's better :D

What you recommend for a sound card if you were using a PC. I've got a SB Live Music which outputs good sound for the most part. But I've thought of changing over to an Auzentech or Asus sound card just for the native 1/8 in headphone jacks.

The one built in is fine. If you really care you would buy a DAC and then a headphone amp.

I prefer modular. Plus you don't have to deal with bullshit drivers. Anyway I won't buy anything that's not OS X compatible. USB is easier
