No order placed yet. Probably not until after the BD release, so the CPU may change to a BD. I will go with a Z68 chipset if I go Intel and whatever the latest and greatest AMD chipset is if I go AMD. Looks like Z68 supports up to 32 GB of RAM and with 8 GB DIMMs coming out, that might also be a cheap server option for me.

I may CrossFire another 6870 or, if I have the budget, buy one of the AMD 7000 series or nVidia 600 series if they're out. BF3 and SW:TOR are the target games initially.

I wish GIGABYTE made those motherboard covers like Asus has. Those things are brilliant. I'm tempted to buy one of the Sabertooth boards just for that motherboard cover alone.

I bought the SSD and have 16 GB of DDR3-1600 (both SSD and RAM new and untouched). I'll probably snag a new PS and some drives on sale too. If I do RAID0, I'll grab a USB 3.0 drive to do regular backups with. Or, I may elect to save money and use my unused 750 GB server spare drive at home.

I like Gigabyte boards quite a bit. Current machine has an ASUS but I've used Gigabyte in my server, HTPC, and my brother's PC.

My 16 GBs are GSkill Sniper RAM. I had one set in my HTPC temporarily before my 8 GB kit for the HTPC arrived and it died, so I RMAed it and am awaiting replacement.

My WD drives in my server are the 750 AA...something. Good drives. Over the 4 years the server has been alive 24/7, I've lost 2 of them -- both in the same hot plug bay. WD replaced both under warranty and I bought a spare to keep on hand, which I've never had to use. The server was designed for 5 years and depending on the direction I choose, may not be replaced when/if I shut it down.

I think just about all my RAM is GSkill -- the 8 GB in the server, 8 of the 12 GB in the HTPC (the other is a 4 GB ADATA kit which has been awesome), and 8 GB in my main PC.

PC #2 is an MSI K8N Platinum of some variety with an X2-4800 in it. I have no clue what RAM is in there but it is only 2 GB total IIRC. That was my fifth generation box. Current is sixth generation. This next box will be seventh gen and probably the last I build for a main PC, but I've said that the last two gens.

I used to be a cosair snob, been watching gskill for a while. thought I would give em' a shot. I hope mine don't die, maybe I should test them? But my board won't allow me to adjust volatge to 1.25v, lowest is 1.45v

Because I am running a development lab on my main server for my friend (5 or 6 VMs), I've upgraded the HTPC's RAM to support my lab. 12 GB of RAM isn't enough and I am debating whether I should add another 8 or if I should just give up one of the 8 GB kits destined for my next PC and instead, it would get the 4 GB kit from the HTPC and the other 8 GB kit for 12 GB total.

Just go full on 16 :) I can't wait until virtual memory is not needed, I personally disabled it with no ill effects (when running 8GB). I know nothing of running virtual machines, how would I go about learning this, on my own?

I have only had 2 sets of RAM that were confirmed to have died. This GSkill set (which trashed my lab VMs) and a PNY set I got for another server that resulted in my AD becoming corrupted. I got to do an authoritative AD restore on my lab because of that.

Prior to this GSkill set croaking, I had another 8 GB GSkill set provided by my friend. The box was very unstable with it but I could never get it to fail a memtest. This recent set, however, worked fine for 2 months and then the machine started randomly crashing and went down in flames on a memtest almost immediately.

Easiest way is to download VMWare Server (sits on top of Windows Server) or Virtual PC from Microsoft. VMWare also offers ESXi for free but you have to build a box that more or less conforms to their HCL to be compatible. My next class of server, if built, will run ESXi rather than having a Windows base OS.

Even with that box freed up, I'll need the RAM in the HTPC. I plan to move the SQL VM to my main server and probably a new DC since I am also doing a domain restructure.
