My orange cat's purring sounds like somebody trying to start a chainsaw.
Cat's can make sounds much lower than their body size would predict because portions of their larynx are thickened. That reduces vibration frequency.

I don't know how long it takes for the growth of their larynx takes but my guess is that right now, he/she is going through what for a cat is "tweenhood."
