Well, finally got my ram today. I popped it into the mobo and pushed the power button. Success! Video appeared as did the Asus logo. I will install the OS by this weekend and get the file server back up and running. I can't guarantee any sooner if I'm this tired. My first consumer DDR4. I still have to wait to fire up the ECC stuff until I do the dual Xeon.

Nice. Have not built anything that uses DDR4 yet. When I built my last VM server I started building on that platform but it just got way too expensive, was like 3-4 grand with all components as everything was just more money. Cpu, motherboards etc. Might be better now though. That was years ago.

Yeah, I have sunk some money into this already. $1400 for the ECC ram alone. Whenever they make a quiet consumer heatsink I'll spend the $2500+ and finish the build. For now, the Skylake Pentium will have to do.

Or put the server somewhere else, like basement.

I don't have a basement (not many in Texas) and no server room. If I did have one, that's a likely scenario. That and a rack mount system. As it is, I like having it near me. Easy to maintenance.
