Temp dropped from 75F to 30F in four hours. Nuts. Winds that were relatively calm are now in the 30+mph range. I may turn the heat up for the missus and the kitties. I hate using the heat if I don't have to. Now 11C is really cold for your house. Do you do that because of the poor insulation? My mother lives in the Adirondacks and her heat bill (oil) would be super high except that she has a high efficiency wood stove.
 
our 3 level townhouse is a bit too open and all the heat just funnels right up. I wake up sweaty and gross but if I go downstairs its unpleasantly cold. This morning when I came down it was 57 degrees according to my crappy atomic clock/thermometer.

Yeah this house is poorly insulated, not so much the insulation, it's fairly standard R12 batts. It's the vapour barrier that's really bad. It does not look like they even used tape anywhere. There's a few outside walls I had to open for unrelated reasons over the years and noticed they did a shoddy job back in the 60's when it came to vapour barrier. I fixed the places I opened but would pretty much have to do all outside walls to do it right.

Funny thing is my basement is not even insulated at all yet and is usually a few degrees warmer than upstairs. I have a split level house, it's the lower part that's worse.

my house is 100 yrs old, i dont have any vapor barrier to speak of. Originally the insulation was just some newspaper, and it is still there.

my furnace is from the 60s, but i am working on that now, fun times. Surprisingly it also works great but just burns a ton a fuel.
The house was pretty well maintained over the years so it is still worth paying some attention to.

My mother's house is over 150 years old. All sorts of imperfections as all was made by hand. Lots of repairs were made to keep it in good shape.
 
I prefer an airtight house that could be space station worthy, but just add a HRV air exchanger. At least that way you get more control over heat loss.

If I was to build a new house I'd go above and beyond to make sure it's ridiculously airtight. Probably double the outside walls and stagger the studs so I can have more insulation. Even in modern home construction if you go minimum code it's not all that great. Headers above windows are bad too because there's often no insulation at all there, just wood beams. But of course you need that for structure so by doubling the wall, you'd have more insulation including those places.

I do want to look into a wood stove for my current house though, even though it's not well insulated at least wood is cheap and renewable so it would be great to fire it up on these cold -30 days.
