Speaking of street lights they replaced all of ours with LED. I was afraid it would end up being this nasty blue but they're actually pretty decent. There's a bit of blue in it, but it's mostly white. Much brighter too, but not blinding either. My only "complaint" is that it does not diffuse the light as well, they should have sticked with having a glass lens diffuser on them like the HPS ones. I guess they left that out to maximize the brightness.

You'd think the savings would be good for the tax payers, but the city is STILL increasing our taxes every year. :p

Glass? Or acrylic? Or polycarbonate? Drop lens or full-cutoff?

Pics! Taken at different exposures to see LEDs.

Interestingly the window kinda helps see the LEDs because of the refraction.

I'm not sure if they're all like that though, those do appear to have half decent diffusers.

Can't find info on actual models, other than they are made by CREE, but I kinda guessed that, they're a pretty big name in LEDs.

Cool. I don't know much about LEDs myself. But earlier this year, my work replaced all the HPS lights in the parking lot with LEDs. They look really nice.

From what I've heard, though, LED outdoor lighting has had major reliability problems.

I'm strangely arroused by your talk of street lighting....

:D TBH when I was a kid I was always obsessed with the idea of getting close to them, I wanted to see in detail how they looked like and how they worked and how they were wired etc. No idea why. Of course the closest I ever got was when I got a telescope. I was all excited when I managed to dial in to one. And now I just took a zoomed in picture without even thinking twice about it. haha. I loved to mess with electrical stuff though. I remember making my own out of knex and Tide scoops, the green transparent ones. Do they even still make powdered Tide? Have not seen that in ages.

Always thought those were cool too. Wonder how often they have to replace the lamps, and who does that job. :p

At work we have a bunch of "Tagged" alarms in our alarming system for some that are burnt throughout our territory. It takes a long time before they finally send someone out to change them. I think it costs in the region of like 10k to change them, it's specially trained riggers that have to go, and those guys are far and few between and travel around all the cell sites.

I'd love to go up and change one. Pay my travel expenses and accommodations and I'll go! :D

I was wondering about that actually, especially since they don't get as hot. But we've had -30's and so far so good. We'll see when the upper -40's hit.

It's not the cold weather that causes them to fail, it's the hot summer weather....

Oh I see, heat is not really an issue here then, we already been through summer with them. I guess if one was left on during the day by accident maybe like due to a bad sensor or something.

I imagine they will probably start using LEDs for the towers too though as tech improves. There's different style of lights, some are just always on red beacons others flash slowly, like in a dimming fashion, and some are very bright white day flashing. Some switch at night too. When they burn we have to fax NAVCAN with the coords and tower height so they can ensure air traffic stays out of that area. I wish they'd update that system so it would be email instead though.

On that note I should really go to bed, I want to try to get up early tomorrow.
