They don't generally seem to blow catastrophically since it is mostly an age thing. Usually a re-foam, and maybe then replace the ferrofluid in the tweeters and they are good to go again. I don't much care for the KUBE anyways, always seemed like a gimmick to me.This is true.
Of course years later one can locate suitable replacements and use a DSP in front of the amp since the KUBE has the wrong curves for a different TS parameter. Neo mag drivers have motors smaller than the original drivers' ceramic mags with higher sensitivity, etc. Thermals can be an issue particular in biamp conversions where the four ohm drivers in parallel double the effective power on regulated amplifier power supplies (the only kind that should be used hehe!).
But that dip in impedance down to 1.5OHM at 16Hz (effectively 1/2 ohm at the terminals!) is like a crazy gain ride on its own. 100A 240VAC branch circuit necessary to prevent input dips on the amp.
But TBH at that point you'd be better off with beehive motor 18s in the same coupled cavity configuration if your room, walls and floor can handle it. 145 dB at 13Hz is pretty scary but hey you never have to dust anything in the room!

That's what KEF liked to say but I didn't believe it (I don't like equalizers), but my amp at the time could have had something to do with it... but I STILL don't like equalizers. Unless you know something I don't about it. Since you are Rubycon, that is probably trueThey rot but bobbins also could get damaged thermally since that was the limit on that loading type. The domes would freeze from FF aging too but most hack jobs of replacing them wrecked the fidelity. There are a few suitable substitutes if one is willing to modify the crossover appropriately.
The KUBE was most definitely not a gimmick. It assured a genuine 20Hz response within 2dB outside of any room interference. It did use considerable amp headroom to achieve this, however. But unlike other designs the seemingly exaggerated response stay free of "looseness" of other designs. It was OK to run without (the KUBE) but the lowest octave was subdued, particularly noticeable with organ music and (of course) synthesizer registers, etc.
GE makes nuclear reactors too! They've also patented the concept of searching a database by date field. They're into everything now days!
