My LJ 4L was acting weird in Windows 7 and I got tired of messing with it. I don't print much and since I no longer had a scanner either (5p's SCSI card won't work in Win 7), this was perfect. Even if it turns into a POS and only lasts me a couple of years, it is worth it.

best part is third party toner is dirt cheap. Mine is 30 and it is high capacity.

The 4L was my first laser, which I purchased in 1995 for around $500. Over the years, I've "retired" it in favor of other printers, but every time, it came out of retirement to replace them. It actually worked fine on my previous system, which was originally Vista and then had an in-place upgrade to Windows 7. It did not play well with a fresh Win 7 install, however, and it may honestly have been more the USB to Centronics converter than the printer. Nevertheless, it is in my closet and will no doubt be called upon again at some point.

I have always been skeptical of Brother printers to be honest and have always preferred HP for lasers. The exception was the Lexmark Optra S I picked up for $300 back in 2001 (it was a $1500 printer). It finally died in 2009 or early 2010 and the 4L came back into the picture.

Anyway, I've been having some nagging issues and had started looking into a replacement when alfa posted a link to the HL-2280DW. I ran down to Staples late yesterday and they had one more in stock and it was about $40 cheaper than Amazon, so I grabbed it.

never had a brother before either, but the HPs have gone to hell after the 8000 series.

I walked into the house with this big box and my wife said "I thought you said you were going to LOOK at a printer, not buy it." When I told her it was about $40 cheaper than buying from Amazon, she didn't object. :D
