Just got back yesterday evening from 2 straight weeks of camping and fishing. The fishing was fantastic. After a while, I got tired of targeting bass - I usually get bored of them each year. Quite a few 5 pounders. Did some kayak fishing on a smaller (2 miles long) nearby lake - wife and I were the only two humans around - no one on the shores or in the lake. We mostly trolled for crappie from the kayaks, but came up mostly empty - a few really nice 14" bullhead though (like catfish). There was some structure along the shoreline, so I went over there with one of my crappie jigs - I was nailing the bass left and right; 20" and 21" were the larger ones. The 20" was a smallmouth - holy crap did he put up a fight.

Back to the lake we stayed at, we continued to target crappie. I had some errands to run one morning, so I got off to a late start - didn't start until almost 10am. I ended up fishing alone - not a cloud in site, and it was hot. The Canadian station about 15 miles to the north said "feels like 42" - yeah, it felt that hot. But, oddly, the fishing was just as hot on and off. I set out a drift sock and just trolled along with a crappie jig - two or three different brands of twist tails, white, on four different colored jig heads. I don't know how many times I brought in 2 crappie at once, and even landed 3 crappie at once. Plus, I had a jig on a second pole - I'd reel in one pole, leave the fish at the surface of the water, hold the pole with my feet, and reel in the 2nd pole. Threw the vast, vast majority back in, but kept about 20 each day and fileted them up for the freezer. We'll be having crappie for dinner once a week for quite a while. Kept a few bullhead one of the days so we can have a southern style catfish fry. Perch were incredibly annoying while fishing for crappie - you could always tell whether it was a perch hitting the jig or a crappie. Kept a few larger perch for lunch, but the little 4-7" perch seemed to be everywhere. (Including the stomach of one of the crappie that were in the live well, evidenced by it being spit out and floating in the live well.) Usually, I take a few pictures of the fish, but I can't recall if I took a single picture of a bass this year, and never took the camera or phone down to the fish house while I was filleting the fish.

(And by good fishing, we're talking triple figures for fish caught on many of the days.)

I got out to my favorite fishing spot this past weekend for only the 2nd time this year. It's really only in prime conditions for about 2-3 months out of the year, around the end of summer when the river runs a lot lower/slower than earlier in the year. I wade out in the water the majority of the time, but I also have a honey hole where I fish from this rock on the bank of the river. I also wade there sometimes but this past weekend I didn't have time to do that so I just fished from there.

I ended up catching 10 small mouth in the span of about 3 hours. The first spot I waded at I got to around 7:15 and there was a lot of action. I only ended up landing 4 there however, with a lot of hits.

When I moved to my honey hole spot, I was getting A LOT of hits. I was only there for about 40 minutes and caught 6 there. There was a point where literally 3 casts in a row I caught fish.

Most of them were probably in the 10-16 inch range, but these 2 were the largest ones I caught. Sorry for the first blurry image my gopro was in my pocket under water and I didn't realize there was water on the case when I took it.

I also had a question about leaving hooks in fish. One of the fish I caught it was hooked deep in the throat all in the little spaces in the tongue. It wasn't a gut hooked fish or anything. But after trying to get it out for a while I wasn't making any progress so I just cut the line. The fish wasn't really moving when I put it back in the water and it kind of drifted out of sight. It wasn't bleeding or anything so I know that I didn't have any organs hooked or anything.

But my question is - will this kind of hook just find it's way out? Or is the fish going to be screwed? I've always heard they rust out but I really don't know anything about it happening. Since these were all small mouth I just couldn't get my plyers down far enough to work it out, and this was one of the smaller ones I caught.

That said, if conditions are good this weekend I'm heading back there for even longer then I was there before. I had to be back by noon to watch my son. It's raining right now though so I hope it doesn't get it running too fast because I don't have too much time to go back this year.

It's the annual mullet run here in south Florida. Every year around this time huge schools of mullet (bait fish) migrate south along the beaches. Following them and fattening up are all sorts of predator fish - big jacks, bluefish, tarpon, snook, and sharks... lots and lots of sharks. Caught this guy today after having my line snapped a few times from monsters. Just before I hooked this one I was standing about waist deep when a 6 footer or so swam by within a couple feet of me. That was... pleasant. I started backing up to shallower water when this guy grabbed my bait and took off. Around 30 minutes for the fight, but nice photo op of an acrobatic spinner shark.

Pretty close I guess.

Yeah, some of the are very high speed.

But I guess even great whites can jump amazingly well of course.

We pulled in a 12' Tiger shark one time on the boat in about 60' of water in the 70's.

Didn't even pull it on the boat, wouldn't have fit, we towed it in.

That dude was a monster.

Normally if we pulled up a shark out on the rocks like that we would cut the line and move, the big groupers usually wouldn't be biting with sharks in the area.

throw it back to fatten itself up on unsuspecting swimmers. I don't like the taste/texture of shark. too thick/chewy. plus the regulations of what you can keep/size when we hqve dozens of species is just not worth remembering.

Went down to the Keys Wednesday/Thursday for some family fun. We went out fishing yesterday most of the day - couldn't ask for a better day with flat seas and relatively cool air. Fishing was kinda crappy, but the kids had a blast so no complaints here (and a bad day on the water sure as hell beats any day at the office). Fair to say the sharks kept more than we got. Bastards were ferocious. Lost a couple big tunas and a whole lot of big snapper/grouper to the sharks, but we got plenty of yellowtail meals.
