I think before my SSD, I was using... wow, I don't remember. There was an 80GB SATA a long time ago, then a 500GB Seagate, but it's MBR broke and never could be fixed to OS booting, just data drive... maybe it was back to the 80GB then? Or perhaps the 750? Amazing, I can't recall at all.

Anyways, this is my smallest main drive ever, and I'm doing just fine for space, and have become more aware of keeping an eye on it than ever before.

The mega sized nef threads have been removed.

There is a theory that these uber long threads are the ones causing the problems with the forum speed. The nef thread has been removed and I have also removed the thread that was recently resurrected to be a nef thread replacement.

The soon to be ***official*** longest thread in AT history

In the interest of forum efficiency, we want to see if removing these ultra long nef threads will result in forum speed improvement.

K, so, why is this still here?

I am still old school and like to separate the OS. It probably isn't necessary these days with things like NTFS, but back in the days of FAT, it was a very good idea. :D

The other partition is fine. It is a 640 GB drive and keep in mind I have several TB of network storage for documents.

It's pretty much unheard of now. Might be time to move up your habits a few years. :p

I know you have substantial network storage.

So you have a 640GB drive in two partitions, one probably 50GB or so, that holds the 34GB OS, some special programs, a few games?, and your documents. The other partition, sized at some 550GB or so, holds... the other programs and games, with how much space used?

Of course, I may very well just decide to not upgrade again until next year. The geek in me wants to upgrade now, but the analytical part of me knows that I can't justify it. Encoding performance? No, I have 2 quad core systems for that. Gaming performance? The 6870 should address any immediate issues. Diablo 3, BF3, and SWTOR might be the games that would necessitate a system upgrade.

If you have two quads already, your justification just got blown out of the water. Wait for those new games, and then upgrade if they need it. If not, save your money, or use it for other fun things.

I remember my first build in 95. I used a 1 GB drive for everything. :D That was the second largest IDE drive available at the time to consumers, eclipsed only by the 1.2 GB "monster." I was an early adopter and when the gigantic 2.5 GB and 4 GB IDE drives were released, I jumped on them quickly.

The two quads (Q6600 and Athlon II 630) are in server systems. If I need to encode anything, I do it on those boxes. Those aren't available for gaming.

Hahahaha! My first computer was a purchased Dell with an 80GB, filled it in 18 months, and then sat there wondering how the hell I did that.

Early adopters get raped so bad. :(

Of course not. I can only think of a few games that use quads, the only reason for quads right now is if you need to run large programs, encoding, video editing, crunching, et cetera. So since you have quads to handle those aspects, there's nothing left.

I think my IT background makes me do it too, though in the IT world, we dedicate arrays rather than partitions to the OS. :D

Now I remember why I did partitions. The first partition, IIRC, is 50 GB and holds Win 7. The second is a 20 or 30 GB partition with XP installed. At the time, I wasn't fully sold on Vista so I dual booted with XP in case I ran into incompatibilities. I never did and used Vista and then 7 and never bothered restructuring the drives.

"My wife got all concerned last Sunday after reading on Facebook that 53 dead eagles were found in the local Philly area."

Bahahahahhaha!

My first CPU was $1000 IIRC. The amazingly fast Pentium 120 Mhz. My RAM purchase for that box was 8 MB of the new EDO RAM standard for $375.

Prior to that build, I used my Amiga and had a 486 SX 25. I remember 4 MB of RAM was $150 then, and that was a BARGAIN.

Well, this way, you can dedicate a drive, and leave the work habits at work! :p

7 is wonderful. All hail 7. :awe:

....ouch. That's brutal. What year?

1995. I later inadvertently destroyed that CPU in an overclocking experiment gone awry. D: I replaced it with a Pentium 133 for like $200. I think I still have the P120 in a box and I actually have that first PC in my garage. At least the board, CPU, and case are out there. I don't remember if I scavenged the RAM.

Long weekend, then I work both jobs on Tuesday, work this one on Wednesday, then have the rest of the week to kill before school starts again. Still ranked #3 on the Calculus wait list, which controls getting into Physics. Still ranked #20 on the Engineering Ethics course, which was just a way to get ahead a bit.

It's all still really hinging on the summer courses.
