So I've been fairly sick for the past couple months. By fairly, I mean infectious disease specialists, assorted antibiotics, etc...

So at my appointment today, I was told to eat NO dairy at all for the next three weeks. I usually live on cheese / milk / milk-based foods.

So now I need suggestions as to what else I can make for myself. Recipes, ideas, anything would help. I think I'll make some pasta with vodka sauce for tonight, but I only have a couple sauces without milk in them, so I'm pretty much stuck with the vodka sauce haha.

Anyone else not eat dairy?

Milk is usually such a major part of my cooking/eating that I feel naked and scared without it :(

On a happy side note, I am no longer on Flagyl, so I can drink the bottle of wine that I've been staring at for two weeks!

Live off fruits, vegetables, and whole grains for the next 3 weeks. 60% whole grains by calories, 40% fruits and veggies. Vary fruits and veggies by color. Drink plenty of water. Split your meals into 5 mini meals a day. Drink a glass of wine a day, after dinner.

I don't eat most dairy products, especially cheese but the most important thing I'll suggest to you is BE SURE to read whats in foods before you eat them because avoiding dairy products is harder then you think ... for example Vodka sauce is usually full of heavy cream.

Good idea. I like the mini-meals idea. I have a couple boxes of Triscuits and some loaves of whole grain bread, but I'll have to run out and increase my variety of veggies tonight.

Hmm I hadn't thought of that. I wonder how much of my current food is out of the question. Looks like I'll be doing some learning tonight.

Is milk ever listed under anything other than milk in the ingredients?

Watch out for Lactose (milk-derived sugar) ... can't think of anything else at the moment.

You can do lots with shrimp, chicken, and steak! There's many tomato sauces that are tasty as well.

Rice pilaf goes well with with steak or grilled chicken. The boxes / bagged mixes are easy to make.

I'm trying to do myself what I recommended to you. It's partly a fast, and partly a general health diet. It's challenging, though, because of all the highly processed foods that are in my diet ordinarily. I've done it before for periods of 2 weeks or more, and it really did make me feel better. I had more energy, felt less sleepy during the day, and just felt healthier. Initially, there's a period of craving processed, quick and easy foods (usually high in saturated fat, sugar, sodium, simple carbs or a combination), but after a while you stop craving those and crave healthy food.

Actually, the last time I did this, I did it for about 2 months straight. I lost about 15 lbs during that time (nearly all fat). After 2 months, I tried eating a hamburger and some fries at McDonald's (was there with some friends after class) and I felt really lethargic and a little queasy afterwards. A couple days later, I had some junk food (chips and jerky) on road trip. Again, slightly queasy/lethargic afterwards, but less so then after eating at McDonalds. After that, my body just kinda got used to junk/fast food again, and I ate them from time to time up until a week ago. Now I'm trying to kick the habit of eating any unhealthy food, seeing as it really is an addiction. If I eat any fast food in the future, I'll try to limit it to salads and the like, and no junk food for me at all, just healthy snacks.

This is true ... but remember what I said about dairy & be sure to look down the list of seasoning for powdered milk.

Also another sneaky dairy ingredient you'll need to check for is Whey.
