Ruger 10/22

Keep in mind that a 22lr is a very small round. You can find this rifle for $150-$250. Learn to shoot with iron sights first, then search around for a $200 scope.

Once you have more of a handle on the fundamentals, step up to a...

Savage, or other Bolt action

Holds only 4 rounds internally, but has its uses.

Or get a semi.

AR - 15

Plenty of people put scopes, or red dots, or whatever. You can go crazy with AR-15's, and they are plenty of fun.

My buddy has a FAL in .308 caliber. It is semi-auto. It is very comfortable to shoot, the semi autos reduce recoil quite a bit. Something like that would fit what you're looking for. You an mount a scope, 20 rd. magizines are common, and the recoil is very modest while still being a realitively powerful round.

But, with that being said, if all you ever plan to do is shoot paper targets, get a .22.

Heh, I'd like to see a ruger 10/22 get destroyed with poor maintanence.

Change poor maintanence to no maintanence, then sure. :p

I really should disassemble mine and clean it thoroughly..great little gun.

I'm convinced everyone damages at least one gun due to maitenence issues. Therefor, it might as well be a $175 gun.

10/22 is a great rifle. There are tons of add ons for it. Yes they still make magazines of infinate capacity. There are a ton of mods and alot of Ruger mini-14 accesssories will fit the 10/22. They'll have no problem firing bulk (cheap) ammunition and they are quite accurate.

I wouldn't personally go with a 17 hmr just because of the cost of ammo vs 22lr. However a 17 hmr is neat because you're firing a grain of rice at 2500fps. 22mag is fun too, and some of those rifles can be had on a budget, but once again, the ammo is more expensive than the 22lr. I'd say, get a 10/22 and maybe a 22lr auto pistol for some diversity at the range, and still keep cost down by shooting bulk 22lr ammo that you get at $7 for 500 rounds.

I've had my 10/22 for 25 years, it hs been a great gun. I have a couple of high capacity magazines for extended plinking.
When I first got it, i did abuse the finish, strapping to all sorts of odd places, fashioning my own scabbard for the dirt bike, etc.
It would be hard to beat for all around fun plinking.
If you wanted more range, you could opt for the 22 magnum version.

You might also consider .17 HMR, it's a fun little round. Not nearly as cheap as .22LR but certainly not in the realm of centerfire rifle cartridges.

Eh, .17 really is more like Airsoft at that point.

Umm it has essentially equal muzzle energy as .22LR, and delivers more energy downrange. It is most definitely NOT airsoft. Yes it's a relatively small projectile but it's got a sh!tload of powder behind it.
