I just assumed it was for a sports team, anybody who follows sports just a little and doesn't huff paint will fucking get that "the cobs" is a reference to the Chicago cubs...

No it doesn't. I'm a baseball fan and even "the cobs" is so vague and short that it could be misconstrued as many things.

I lived within a few blocks of Wrigley field for about 5 years, dodged their drunken fans on a daily basis during those seasons, was that drunken fan on several occasions....and "the Cobs" never would have dawned on me as a reference to the Cubs.
