ATOT Electricians: Problem with bathroom vent/fan

Ok in my bathroom I have a Vent/fan combo unit and 2 switches on the wall for it. One goes to the fan, one to the light...and the light stopped working, even with a new bulb.

So i take the light cover off, remove the light, take off the metal shield behind it and theres a 2 outlets: one for the light, one for the fan. Only one of them works. Where might the problem be? I dont know what is on the other side of the box that the fan is in, so i dont know how these are wired, and Im no electrician anyway....but might it be something minor that I can fix?

I just installed one of these a few weeks ago. You have 4 wires coming from the two switches. 2 hots (1 per switch), 1 cold, and 1 ground. The ground doesn't matter much since it will still work without it. These tie into the 2 "outlets" you see in the fan unit. Try reversing the plugs in the unit to see if the light works then. Then put them back to normal and reverse the wiring on the switches. That will tell you whether it's the light unit, the "outlet", or the switch.

Probably the switch.

edit: the socket doesn't have a bunch of corrosion, right?

no corrosion, i didnt even think about the switch but it would make more sense. i gotta run some errands so ill play around with the switches tonight and see if something is loose or whatever

thanks 🙂

Look for a loose wire at the fan or switch.
Otherwise, replace the fan/light unit.

Over time, the heating and cooling of the copper on the wire can cause it to fail where it is attached to a screw if the screw is overtightened. This would be at the switch.

The other scenario is that a wire nut came loose at the fan assembly area. That's an easy fix.

In the end, verify where the failure is and resolve the proper issue (switch, wiring or light/fan). A voltmeter is a good thing to have.
