3. the reason why this is useful is for many reasons, particularly when you need to be in a certain car (e.g. the first 5 subway cars going to south ferry) and you're in the back of the train. instead of leaving the car at every stop, you can walk through the doors (they exist for a reason) to get to the desired cars more quickly.
)

the subway train splits and goes different places?

No, at the South Ferry station, the platform is on a curve and was never extended to handle 10-car trains (as built, local trains only had 5-cars). As such, only the doors in the first 5 cars open at South Ferry. If you are in the back of the train, you will ride around the loop and end up on your way uptown again.

a smart person would get on one of the first 5 cars if he knew he had to get off there

Sometimes you don't have a choice if the station is crowded or the train's about to leave.

I'd rather make eating and drinking on the subway illegal. It would go a long way towards keeping the cars and stations clean. D.C. Metro does this and their stations are far cleaner than NY's.
Seconded. Well, actually, I'm a DC resident, so maybe I shouldn't have much say in NYC affairs, but the food/drink thing is half the reason the stations are typically so clean. Also, supposedly the DC Metro receives more funding.

I think the main reason the Metro is cleaner and the stations nicer is because it's a smaller system:

Fewer trains
Less stations
Less track
Not 24 hours
=more money for cleaning and maintenance

You obviously haven't been paying attention to all the problems with the DC Metro these days. One of the biggest problems is the lack of a dedicated source of funding given that 3 different jurisdictions are responsible for it. Personally I think the No Eating policy is incredibly anal anyway.

exactly. you can be running down the stairs and the train has just pulled up, giving you no time to run a whole football field's length in order to get to the front of the train. you might as well get on and not have to wait for the next one, since that can take awhile.

Yes, and they even stop at the previous station and give you time to move up the train via the platform. Unfortunately, there are a lot of stupid tourists.

No. Some people have an hour or longer commutes. Instead, stupid people dropping their chicken bones on the floor should be punched by fellow passengers. Besides, it is INSANE that I can't drink from my bottled water if I'm thirsty on WMATA.

or maybe someone has never taken that train before? i didn't know about this until i took that train a while back. Its amazing how you can live your entire life in nyc and still not take a certain train. for example, i still have not taken the B/D/Q trains yet. hehe
