Hey all,

Check this out: http://www.x-cad.net/

3D CAD software, like Solidworks... but free - if 100,000 people preregister for it before August.

I've signed up already and the counter says around 48,000 ppl have signed up so far. Tell your friends, post this in other forums, whatever. I know this is a Hot Deals thing and its already been posted. I'm interested in seeing if this will pull through.

Haf a gud dey.

Don't worry, the registration will be pulled once they hit 99,000 e-mail addresses and phone numbers.

put it on slashdot.

Slashdot effect > ATOT effect

I've got a (legal) seat of Autodesk Inventor on my home computer and love it. I would love to see what else is out there, though. I've used solidworks a little bit on school computers, but don't have near the experience in it that I do with inventor.

I'd love a good free program like this. Comeon, tell your friends!

The only required info is the email address. So if you have a lot of gmail invites...

I registered. Let's see what goes down, or if this is spamalicious.

You know why it's going to be free after 100,000, right? If they have 100,000 names, email addresses, and phone numbers, the amount of money they can sell that chunk for will more than pay for the software they'll be giving out for "free" after they sell it to 3rd party advertising agencies. The software isn't free at all, but the company that calls you in the middle of the night and sends you loads of spam will be the ones paying for it, not you.

 for the business practice, but  for those who don't care I guess...

how much would a list like that sell for?

i couldn't imagine it going for more than a dollar per contact...which would only be 100K...

They aren't selling to just one company though...

Junk mail spammers, telemarketers, door to door sales...

Is there just one company doing these type of activities. No.

I'm a bit wary of giving out a name and number. you have to confirm the registration via email so supplying a fake email doesnt do anything. There's a pretty good spam filter on my school email account, so i said what the hell
If this software is bs, no loss
if its real, hey, why not

It's not a normal junkmail list. It's a list of folks who would actually be interested in said product. That means folks who either do it for a living working at similar companies or folks who free-lance or whatever. Schools, maybe. I'm not exactly in the spam business, but it makes sense to pay for a list with a much, MUCH higher potential sales "hit" ratio because it's specific. It would be ideal to sell to companies trying to spam-market their own similar product.
