buying cheap classical CDs isnt always worth it if you plan to listen on a decent hifi, can ruin the experience in my opinion......in fact i've been buying classical/orchestra/bigband on DVD-Audio and SACD lately, omg, its soooo fantastic 🙂

however on a conventional stereo system then it wont make a difference really...

so when you going to add Grieg? Faure? and will this include stuff like Holst etc?

im guessing you favour Beethoven btw?..lol

btw, Vivaldi Four Seasons on a DVD-Audio with double orchestra kicks butt...dont diss it!..heh

were you bored?

was who bored?

for the OP, Debussy's Piano works are just perfect, obviously the Clair de Lune, but others around it are amazing as well, just so good to chill out too.....

Mozart is amazing. I don't understand why you said that his music doesn't stand out.

I'm not saying he isn't amazing. And I'm not saying his music doesn't stand out. I'm saying WITHIN all the mozart works, most of them are very similar. As in, it isn't worth it to get ALL the string quartets, or symphonies, or piano/violin sonatas, etc.

What's your take on Requiem? I absolutely love it. I listen to it before big events (tests, exams, interviews etc...) and it gets me pumped up.

I concur wholehartely.

You won't believe what that did to me the day of the AIME. (American Invatational Mathematicas Exam)

HAHAHAHA. I took that too.

Where's the update? I remembered this thread since Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture just started playing.

Edit: Incorrect punctuation.

It's a great CD. Other good violin concertos are the Barber (Hilary Hahn), Elgar (also Hahn), and the Saint-Saëns. I've also heard good things about the Lalo but don't have a particular recording to recommend.

BTW, there is also a video of Mutter playing the Beethoven with Karajan, which is excellent, and one of Vengerov playing the Sibelius. I heard a great recording of Gil Shaham playing the Brahms on the radio the other day, something else to look into.

You should also list good piano concertos as well, e.g. Brahms, Tchaikovsky, etc.

You also left out Bach's Sonatas/Partitas! Namely the Chaconne! Definitely get a recording of that on violin (again, Hahn has a good one, but there are many, many others) and on guitar.
