Atomic Weapons in WWII: What if Germany had the bomb?

It is common knowledge that Gemany was developing atomic weapons like the USA did. Do you think they would have used it? Or maybe just threaten to use it?

Hmmm, that could have seriously altered the ending of WWII.

How close were they to actual testing?

Discuss.

If they had it, they would have probably used it during Overlord.

Largest modern naval forced amassed - bomb = WINNAR!

I thought they were designing it for a power source not a bomb guess they didn't think about using it as a weapon.

THey had extensive plans to drop a nuke on NYC and were working on multiple delivery systems, the only reason they didn't is because their Nuke program floundered. The conventional rocket attacks on london stand as clear proof that they were willing to attack civilians in a war already lost, and certainly would not have hesitated to nuke NYC.

Truman: "How many nuclear bombs do we have?"
Scientist: "Two."
Truman: "Great!"
Scientist: "So how many are we gunna use?"
Truman: "Two, dumbass!"

What makes you think Germany would have been a bit different?

Had Germany won the Nuke race, we'd all be speaking German now.

Actually, we'd all have 6 legs and be speaking cockroach.

Haha, but no. The yield from the first atomic bombs, although terrifying at the time, wasn't that great. Surely not even close enough to destory a country. Plus, no one had enough to nuke more than a few cities.

Agreed. Hiroshima was on the order of 10 kilotons, while modern Russian suitcase nukes range from 1-10 kilotons. Scary, isn't it? Modern large nukes are measured in the 10+ megaton range. Check this out.

they wheren't really that close to developing a nuclear bomb, but they where extremely close to a deliverable radation weapon based on the same theories of nuclear fission. (they even attempted to smuggle radioactive materials to japan, the sub was intercepted)

used it where? by the end of the war, they had no way to carry something that size across the Atlantic, they could at best have nuked england, that would have sucked, but they still would have lost

That's what I was getting at. With the end in sight, it would have been a useless gesture.

The Battle of the Bulge and a variety of other assualts were seen as useless gestures by Hitler's generals; it doesn't change the fact he was a madman.

Hitler was stark raving mad. He would have used it. On russia, britain, and US if he could

The world would probably have nearly been destroyed if he had any quantity of bombs at his disposal, adn the means to get them where he wanted them.

Hey ... I saw that show on the history channel a month or two ago .... scary stuff.

Also, even if the Genmans successfully developed and launched a few nukes at the allies ... I think they would have still been clobbered in the long run. They would have run out of men eventually.

I think if they nuked Russia, they would have been able to concentrate more forces on the Western front, and the war would have taken longer. The total number of lives lost to that damned war would have probably been 15 to 20 million more is my guess. (at least 50% civilian)

If they nuked England,
England is a compact country, a large portion of the population/their resources would be affected. England is a pretty tough nation, and I don't know if they would have fallen to Germany. If somehow Germany and Russia had settled their differences, and Germany was able to concentrate 100% of it's forces on England, then maybe.

If they nuked the USA,
This country is very spread out, and early Nukes would have done some catastrophic damage, and horrible loss of life, however, the vast majority of us would have survived. It would have enraged the American population Far more then the bombing of pearl harbor. I think More Americans would have gone off to fight. More risks would have been taken, and the loss of life would be higher on both sides. Assuming Russia and England were still fighting strong (as well as the "smaller" allies such as Canada and Australia), The allies would have still most likely prevailed. Roosevelt was a smart man and he would have known better than to use Stalin's tactics. The kill/loss ratio would not be nearly as bad as the russian/german ratio in Stalingrad.

Now if they had nukes before the battle of the bulge, and they were accurate, and the germans knew exactly where the allied armies were, and they used them tacticly to wipe out entire armies, and they had more then 2, say 5 or 6, they may have had a chance at world domination. However, even still, I believe they would have had one hell of a hard fight, and the war would have dragged on for decades.

EDIT:
One additional note, the answer to the original question.

IMO, Hitler was the most atrocious, vile, detestable, pernicious, nefarious, and vicious, fanatic oppressor that this earth has ever seen.

He would have used the nukes, and he would have enjoyed the additional misery to others that it caused.

I wish everything that everyone has ever said "I wouln't wish that upon my worst enemy" would happen to hitler.

yep. hitler would have demanded complete personal control, and would have used it on london immediately.

I can't say I agree with that. He would have needed to win quite a number of other 'races'; by the time the Americans used the bomb, it was more about endgame than about turning the tide.

Don't forget that even with a working atomic weapon, Hitler (nor AMerica) were capable of the sort of mass production that characterized the cold war.

Lots of people would have been killed, they just would have been british instead of japanese, and the end result would still have been an eventual allied victory.

And to think that Einstein is actually German... :Q

And and 'untermensch' in Hitler's eyes, which is why he left Germany and came to the US. In disposing of and dispossesing the Jews, Hitler dumped the skillset needed to win the war right into the thands of the allies.
