Yep that is your credit union, not most banks!!!!

Now we get into my first rule of life. If there's a private choice for purchasing goods, or especially manipulating money, it's much better than a publicly traded company. A private organization is beholden to you, the customer, not shareholders. Publicly traded companies would whore out their mothers for a profitable next quarter, without any concern for the future. Private companies rely more on their names, and if they fuck their their customers over too bad, they won't be around for long.

Many bank ATM's don't use envelopes now. Just stick your cash or check into the slot, then the ATM adds it up and tells you the amount. then you have the choice to accept and have it deposited or cancel the transaction.

True, credit unions are not actually owned by a private person, but by the individual account holders. It's designed almost like a cooperative. Even to the point where they may hold meetings to elect the managers/operating officers, where the persons casting those ballots are the individual account holders of that bank. As a result you generally get friendlier service, lower loan rates and less overall bull shit.

However, with everything there is an advantage/disadvantage. Credit unions are often inconvenient and/or have limited technology and/or available services. I.E. i have a credit union with the state when I was a state employee. I used them to refinance my first house. I moved to a new house in a bordering county and still retain ownership of the old property. Unfortunately now there are absolutely no branches in the county. I have to drive around 30 miles to get to the nearest credit union branch. Also this credit union doesn't allow online bill pay through their online services. You can only view balance and loan balance.

Also they don't have electronic services for wire transfer, so if I try to make an online bill payment to them, it takes 4 days from my BOA account, verses my cable bill (Comcast) takes only a day. So ultimately I have to mail a check to pay my mortgage.

For an amount that large I would have gone to a teller. I will put a couple hundred bucks in an ATM at most - usually only cheques, since cash I tend to keep for fast food and other small purchases I don't want to use debit for.

Also you are lucky the ATM did not start trying to kill you by filling the room with water.

eh, be sure to follow up with them. Had a similar thing happen with a cashiers check, they reimbursed me for the difference. 3 months later they said they never found the deposit so they just took it out of my account. I was not happy.

Lots of new ATMs allow for deposits without envelopes which makes cash deposits available instantly as opposed to after they get the money out and verify it.
Mine counts cash but there is still an overnight delay. Yes, it's bullsh*t.

I HIGHLY doubt the OP put in $1000. I would bet $100 on the fact he actually put in $900. These machines are very damn accurate and designed to spit back whatever you put in if you don't like what they count.

Sounds like they saw the $900 deposit and gave you a credit for the next $100.

Don't leave it up to the bank to finish this. Follow up for 100% resolution.

Diebold won't steal your money. They're on camera at every turn, and everything gets accounted for.

Bank employees cannot access the internals of the ATM.

It's because they're picky about money that it's very likely he put 10x$100, and one ended up in the reject bin. If the bill is folded, crumpled a little, or the sensor needs adjusting then it's not unlikely at all.

I had an ATM error once when I was a poor high school student. Needed money for a lunch or something I was doing and I was withdrawing $40 or something like that. The machine spit out $20 and said have a nice day. The receipt showed that I withdrew $40 so I had to go inside and be like wth?

They credited my account $20 but was still a huge waste of time.

They may be accurate, but money is dirty and dirt can screw with moving parts. So it's not implausible that something like this could happen.
