ATM fees, cash advances, and stupidity

A couple weeks ago I went to the ATM and withdrew $100. As the ATM was spitting out the the cash I had this sinking feeling. I realized that I had used the credit card instead of the debit card, you know, the debit card that had fee free withdrawals from that particular ATM. I thought "Crap, this is a cash advance and I'm going to get raped on fees and interest, I just knows it." So far my screw up has cost a $2 ATM fee, a $10 dollar "transaction fee" for the cash advance, and a $1 finance charge. I pay the balance every month but I'm guessing the bank is going to hit me for another $1 finance charge next statement as well just because. So one careless moment at the ATM has cost me more in fees and interest than the total I've paid in credit card interest in the last 15 years combined.

How does that make you feel now? Will you check before using an ATM in the future? How do you view your bank, now that you have been subjected to this? Do you think this event will affect any relationships you may be in now (or in the future)?

My bank sucked anyway, but my self esteem has taken a body blow. I've always viewed myself as "too smart to pay interest on CCs". Now I'm just another dumb schmuck. I see viagra in my future, yet another expense resulting from a moment's thoughtlessness.

Well, at least you will now fit in with most of society. Quit being an outcast...jump in, the water's warm.

My bank charges $28 for over withdrawal, of coarse, if you are unsure of your balance you can ask the atm machine for a print-out first. On the the receipt will be 4 figures marked, current, available, maybe, and, go ahead, make our day.

that's why i don't like debit/credit cards.... i like a plain atm card.

i think he's talking about a real credit card, not the credit/debit cards, that banks issue. You can still pull cash out from a credit card if you have the PIN, but it's coming from a credit account, not a bank account.

I don't even know the pin on my CC to take out a cash advance.

Same. I think one of my cards gave instructions on how to set up a pin when I got it, but I just tossed them. With the rates for cash advances, it would probably be cheaper to go to the local loan shark.

The pin number to your credit card is the same as your ATM card? I randomly picked a number for my credit card pin and filed it away for dire emergencies only.
