How do you guys avoid them?

Move to somewhere that doesn't tend to charge for ATM withdrawls.
UK ftw!

Easy: Stop using other bank's and independent ATMs. Plan ahead.
What you are paying for is your inability to plan ahead, and "convenience."
I know that sounds harsh, but it's the truth.

I guess there really isn't anyone to blame but myself... I need to carry more cash, and somehow not spend it too fast...

You have serious fvcking problems if you can't control yourself enough to avoid that. I haven't even had that many cash transactions all year!
The only time I ever got hit with one of those fees was when I was on the turnpike and suddenly became very affraid that I wouldn't have enough money to get off of it. The only way to get money out of your atm card was via ATM... no debit with cash back was available anywhere.
Thats $1.50 in 5 years.

Well the problem is, I travel alot for business, when I do it often becomes difficult to find the nearest bank quickly without awkward social situations.
On top of that it also becomes difficult to figure out how much money you really need to carry... I try to avoid carrying too much cash around... because I end up spending more freely when I can physically see the money to spend.
Having said all that.. I do realize there is a problem here... thats why I'm looking for some insights about how others manage it.

May I ask why you don't use a checkcard for most purchases?
