ATM charges...

Man I've spent $116 on those $2.00 fees so far this year... frustrating.

How do you guys avoid them?

my Credit union reimburses me 10 a month. i also get free with them.

but heck i maybe use the ATM 3 times a month if that.

Here's a an idea: only use your bank's ATMs?

It's just so crazy it might actually work!

(ps: I'm just teasing... I know at times you can't make it to an ATM operated by your bank...)

$116 on ATM charges is ridiculous unless you have a really really good reason. But for purposes of just getting cash on the go, there is no reason you should be paying those fee's at all. My bank charges $2 per foreign transaction, not to mention the other bank's fees. I probably accumulate no more than $4 per year in ATM fees. I know where my bank ATM's and locations are and if I know Im gonna need cash and there isnt a bank around me, I'll take a few extra minutes to drive to my ATM and get the cash, especially for road trips and vacations. Last year, we went to Florida for Spring Break, and I knew my bank would not be found in Florida, I carried $600 cash on me the whole time.

Easy: Stop using other bank's and independent ATMs. Plan ahead.

What you are paying for is your inability to plan ahead, and "convenience."

I know that sounds harsh, but it's the truth.

You can avoid them with a little planning.

Know where your bank's ATM's are located and if you are going to an area without one, load up on cash before hand. I hadn't touched another bank's ATM in years.

Don't you have to .... like... go to a foreign country and get shot at to get a USAA account?

QFT...stick to your own bank's ATMs. just withdraw more cash each time...

if you really need to convenience, switch to compass bank, or those other banks that will reimburse you the fees

Move to somewhere that doesn't tend to charge for ATM withdrawls.
UK ftw!

You know, this is about as useless an answer as "stop using money."

I guess there really isn't anyone to blame but myself... I need to carry more cash, and somehow not spend it too fast...

If you need cash (I just use a check card) take out all you need for the week and give yourself a daily allowance. Leave the rest at home.

You have serious fvcking problems if you can't control yourself enough to avoid that. I haven't even had that many cash transactions all year!

The only time I ever got hit with one of those fees was when I was on the turnpike and suddenly became very affraid that I wouldn't have enough money to get off of it. The only way to get money out of your atm card was via ATM... no debit with cash back was available anywhere.

Thats $1.50 in 5 years.

Well the problem is, I travel alot for business, when I do it often becomes difficult to find the nearest bank quickly without awkward social situations.

On top of that it also becomes difficult to figure out how much money you really need to carry... I try to avoid carrying too much cash around... because I end up spending more freely when I can physically see the money to spend.

Having said all that.. I do realize there is a problem here... thats why I'm looking for some insights about how others manage it.

I hate PNC bank from the bottom of my heart because they ruined my life but I love their no atm fee account. They reimburse for all atm fees which comes in handy.

PNC reimburses huh? Now how did they ruin your life?

Here is what we do:

Go to any store that takes debit and buy something small that you may need. Then take cash out from your debit card. No fee, you only have to buy something that you will probably need anyways.

May I ask why you don't use a checkcard for most purchases?

I actually use a USAIRWAYS Creditcard for 99% of my transactions... I think the single biggest cause of ATM withdrawls are parking garages which often don't accept plastic.

Yeah they do. As for the ruination of my life, they didn't directly but they are involved. 🙁 It will be in an upcoming thread

I really think the answer is to learn how to not squander money just because it happens to be in your pocket. You'll be much better off solving that problem than by changing banks to avoid ATM fees.

I go to the ATM twice a month, get the same amount of money every time, and that covers me for two weeks. I have paid some ATM fees but only when it was an emergency. Probably 3-4 times in 10 years.

I don't know if there is a real answer other than self-discipline. It really is illogical to spend differently with cash vs. ATM withdrawals.

And for business, I just take $500 with me in hundreds, and 8 out of 10 times I only need to break one for a week-long trip. Everything goes on the credit card. Maybe carrying large bills would be a deterrent to spending so freely.
