Atlantis Bahamas - anyone ever been there?

Paradise Island was a lot nicer before Atlantis overdeveloped on it. It had more charm and character. There was a long road lined with old trees that I could no longer find. You would go down by where Club Med used to be and then hang a right and go down that road towards another hotel, I think it was a Holiday Inn. All of that is gone now and it is all part of Atlantis. I was there for a month back in the mid 90s when there was only one bridge to and from Nassau. Downtown Nassau is even more depressed than it was then. Almost all the storefronts are closed from where the ships dock to where the bridges are to PI. I remember some old hotels and bars on the Nassau side of the bridge, going towards the left off of the bridge from PI. One bar had a lot of pictures of Ernest Hemingway on the walls. He fished those waters and liked to drink too. I try to imagine what that place was like when he went there. It must have been much nicer. It was much nicer 15 years ago too. I would go back but not stay at Atlantis. I'd find some hotel on Cable beach and take a water taxi to PI if I wanted to go there. Hurricane Hole isn't the same either. The marina in Atlantis must have taken over their business too.

so are you saying the last time you went to Atlantis was back in the mid 90's?

so many people are posting in here totally not giving any really valid feedback. it's already well known that if i was looking for an "intimate" or "get away" vacation that Atlantis is obviously not the place to go. it's also already well known that if i'm looking for a budget vacation spot to go to, Atlantis is not the place to go.

it is like me asking if anyone has been to bora bora and then people talking about how expensive it is and to go elsewhere cause it's cheaper - that is irrelevant. thailand is not even remotely in the picture. this is for a 4 night getaway - thailand would take like 2 days out of 4 nights just to get to/from, and would cost much more expensive, in the flight alone.

i also really don't care what it "used" to be like on Paradise Island. i am not a time traveler so that is totally irrelevant. i just want people's opinions, who have actually been there not just "heard" about it or want to recommend other places. sorry if this is coming off asshole'ish - this thread is totally derailed, and now that i'm contemplating between Atlantis and Isla Mujeres, I'm looking for opinions on it.

and i KNOW those 2 vacation spots are totally night/day as far as the atmosphere.

No I was back there a few years ago. I would go there before I would go to Mexico. Sorry to taking you time traveling down memory lane. Paradise Island has a special place in my heart. I had good times there in my youth. Don't think that the locals are not nice to tourists, they are. They are desperate for money so they are nice. They depend on tourists from the States. When our economy suffers as it is doing now, less people go on vacations and their business suffers. As I said, I would not stay in Atlantis, I like the idea someone posted about the Comfort Suites across the street. I also recommended staying on Nassau too, there is a nice old hotel on Cable beach. Go there and wing it. I am sure you will find a room. You can haggle the price down even if that is your thing. This is not their busy season. It is more popular to go there and all other hot and tropical places in the winter. good luck and have fun wherever you wind up going.

You'll have a great time. Atlantis is a great experience. I just wanted to make sure you budget enough. To many people go without enough money to cover them their entire trip because they failed to do their research/took into consideration the costs and then had a "horrible vacation."

Its like doing Vegas right. If you have the money, you will have a grand old time.

As for making your own drinks. It is possible(no glass bottles) but its not always practical and some areas of the resort do enforce no outside drinks(including water).

Most people that go on cruises aren't going on 'real' cruises anymore than having a 'real steak' dinner at a Sizzler or Ponderosa...the ghetto kid content goes WAY down as price of admission goes up. Despite public opinion, the children of higher class tend to know their manners.

There are a lot better places to go than Thailand.

Not to hijack. But what is a "real" cruise?

I've never been on a cruise, but will probably be going on one within the next year or two(honeymoon) on either Royal Caribbean(back to back 7 nights) or Celebrity (11 nights).

FYI pricing:

From the Travelzoo Newsdesk:

NATIONWIDE--OCTOBER 24, 2011-- Today, Atlantis, Paradise
Island in the Bahamas launched a huge sale for stays during
peak winter season. Prices have dropped to the lowest we've
ever seen for this travel period.

Room rates at all five towers within the Atlantis resort
have been cut by as much as 60% for stays Jan. 1 - March 3,
including weekends, which usually cost a premium.

Even better, book an air-and-hotel package of at least four
nights by Nov. 7 and get an immediate $250 airfare credit
($400 when you stay six nights). This credit is good on any
airline from anywhere in the United States (one per booking,
based on double occupancy).

Nightly room-only rates this winter include:

- Beach Tower: $199 (reg. $509)
Family friendly and closest to the beach

- Coral Towers: $249 (reg. $549)
Located by Marina Village shops and the casino

- Royal Towers: $299-$319 (reg. $599-$649)
Atlantis' iconic tower, near the water park

- The Reef Atlantis: $369-$409 (reg. $699)
Deluxe waterfront studios and suites with a kitchen

- The Cove Atlantis: $449-$499 (reg. $849)

The Cove at that rate is a great deal...I am sure some travel agents may have further discounts available.

The problem with a 'major' attraction like Atlantis is the WalMart crowd coming with their 6 kids and bingo groups on a vacation tour. They act like they are part of the 1% and their kids are freaking unkempt animals.

The Cove usually is out of the price range of this type of ilk and primarily mostly adults especially if going when school is in session.

I like traveling during October prior to Halloween. Most parent's are leveraging Thanksgiving for a 4 day weekend and couples/singles waiting on Halloween to go for the Horror nights at a lot of places.

The beach towers and the off-property hotels usually bring the bands of children on-site.

Disney parks are the worst for this type of crowd around here...especially the families that live locally.

The Jeeebus family will be laying waste to Disney come Nov. 2. Gonna get my ghetto on at Saratoga Springs and do my best to fit in amongst my central Florida redneck brethren.

Rather than using "axe" I'll switch it up and just throw in a bunch of "y'all"s - should be fine.

those prices for the royal towers are a lot more than i paid. i paid $199/night for december 8th - december 13th and that included $250 air credit as well.

so travel zoo is kind of hyping this to be more of a sale than they've had before when in reality it isn't true.

can't wait to go, only like 1.5 months!

EDIT:

oh but i do see its for early next year not this year.

So I'm going in 2 weeks to the Atlantis and I have a question for those of you who have been there...

I have done a little bit of reading and heard that there are snorkel trips where you can snorkel with sharks. I'm wondering if anybody on here has done that trip before and if they have one they recommend.

As well, are there any general snorkel trips that people recommend in Bahamas? I'm not going to be doing any diving because my wife doesn't want to do it so we're going to stick to snorkeling.

I've done snorkeling with sharks in Bora Bora, but not the Bahamas. Definitely the most exhilarating portion of the snorkel trip and something you should do at least once.

Not sure how it works in the Bahamas, but we were in somewhat deep water - about 50-60 feet and they were throwing some dead fish out to attract the sharks.

Don't be too adventurous and wander past the normal streets.
That area has built up tremendously in the past few years.
The casino is nice if you're into that thing. It's easy to drop some money into them tables so watch it. 😉
