Atlanta for a day... what to do?

I'm heading to Atlanta this week with my wife for a conference she is presenting at. We have one mostly free day (Thursday) and I'm trying to figure out what to do. We will be staying downtown near the Peachtree center and would prefer everything to be within easy walking distance from there or a MARTA station. I think the dinner that's part of the conference will be at the aquarium so we will already be seeing that. Any suggestions for those in the know?

Also, I live in WA which has the highest liquor prices in the states (or very near to it). How are liquor prices in Atlanta? Every time I travel to a different state I always check the liquor stores if time allows. It's nice to save a few $ off that bottle of single malt I've been eying for a while...

Thanks!

Also the High museum nearby if you want to go to an art museum. Marta sucks, but feel free to experience it. Peachtree in general is a nice area so there's a decent walkability to it, although sort of depends on where you are on it.

I haven't anything to compare to, but I don't think liquor is all that expensive. Far as I know nothing is added onto the price but sales tax(I mean hidden addons).

The African Art exhibit between Concourse A and B underground at Hartsfield Jackson...NOT

Jimmy Carter Presidential museum if you want a good laugh

Were actually about a block away from Centennial Park so we are more or less central. The High Museum looks interesting as well as the Coke Museum though the Coke Museum is much closer, only about 4 blocks away from the hotel it looks like.

Holy crap that place looks insane. I may have to make the trip north just to see that...

It's right off I-85, near Georgia Tech(across the highway from it basically) and it shouldn't be too far from where you are. However that place is expensive for what you get.

Ha, expensive. I just looked at the menu and it seems so cheap compared to the same type of stuff here in the Seattle area.

Totally hit up the Varsity. It's an Atlanta staple. Or Fox Brother's BBQ if you'd be interested in good southern BBQ.

If you're into beer at all, I'd recommend checking out Sweetwater Brewery. They've got great beer, and usually pretty great prices.

It may be a pretty standard response, but the Coke Museum is pretty cool. It's totally worth it just to try Beverly at the end of the museum in the tasting room.

I'm sure I could come up with a hundred more ideas, but with one day, those would be my top picks.

Coke museum is ok, i like the aquarium more though. Varsity is pretty cool, but i wouldnt go out of my way for it. But i ahve lol

chicken and waffles is fun for the experience the food is ok to good. Nothing great. But its a cool experince place kinda like varsity.

Georgia Aquarium is right next door...and a LOT BETTER. It's truly marvelous.

I'd go here. We missed it last visit, but we plan to go back.

Also, in the building with the South Korean Embassy in it, there is a great hole in the wall place in the commons with fantastic pho. Or, at least, there used to be. I don't think it had a name, and it really was just a hole in the wall. It's right in that same area.

Are you vegetarian? There were a couple great such places there I think as well.

If you are going to the Varsity(I would avoid it personally), then you are very close to some of the most awesome doughnuts on the planet. You should go check out the Sublime Doughnut shop, it is very near GT and the Varsity.

As H54 says those of us that live here know that the Varsity sucks ass...don't go as you WILL be hugely disappointed.

The Braves will not have a home game until Friday, so that might not be an option for you.

Thanks for the ideas. We will be hitting the aquarium, either as a closed dinner event with the conference (in New Orleans we were in the Aquarium and in Chicago we had the Field Museum) or just for the heck of it if the dinner is held elsewhere.

Anyone that recommends The Varsity isn't an Atlanta native...
