I return to my college town (Charlottesville) and the best doughnut place in the entire world, Krispy Kreme, is gone! How DARE Atkins challenge my eat-them-as-they're-made-gooey-deliciousness?!?

Seriously, is KK really doing that poorly these days that they have to shut down? They're tons better than any alternatives and I've never been by one that wasn't making a sale at that moment.

KK stock is tanking badly..

they grew too fast...

when I was still in the bay area, KK is considered VERY special, since you have to drive down to silicon valley to get some. Now they are EVERYWHERE...

that coupled with the low carb diet fad = tanking KKs stock

Yes DAMN you atkins. 4th quarter of 2004 KK was one of the fastest growing publicly traded companies, with new franchises opening faster than starbucks. That atkins report came out, I lost lots of money :( heh shoulda seen it coming lol.

KK was never meant to be as popular as Starbucks, even though their greedy owners wanted to expand it just as fast.

You can attribute some of it to Atkins though.

I'm glad they have to shut those fatty-factories down. KK epitomizes how fat we are as a nation.

Krispy Kreme sucks. Thier donuts are OK, but they have no variety at all. Want an old-fashioned donut? Cinamon roll? Don't go to Krispy Kreme cause you wont find them.

Are you high?!?

Dude, our local KK (Reno) has something like 15 different types of doughnuts available in addition to the classic glazed. Minimum.

Honestly I don't know why though. Glazed are the best. Damn tasty. Thank God Atkins hasn't killed the KK here; it's the only one in Northern Nevada.

If I want a glazed donut, there are NO alternatives to KK. DD has decent donuts, but more often than not, I'll head to KK to satisfy a sweet tooth.

I'm not high, but you might be. Do you see "old-fashioned" or "cinamon roll" in there anywhere?

Charlottesville's KK has been around for decades though, not just some new one that couldn't make it.

Anyone who bashed KK has never had a glazed when that beautiful sign is lit and they're being fresh-made. I don't think it would even fall if I dropped it it's so light and heavenly.

I'm glad they have to shut those fatty-factories down. KK epitomizes how fat we are as a nation.

Screw that, I'm 5'11", 140lbs and can run 10 miles. I want my Krispy Kreme.

Their "Old-fashioned" doughnut is reffered to as a "Cake" doughnut. Some sort of copyright/trademark thing I think

Cinnamon rolls... well those aren't doughnuts, now are they? Besides, Cinnabon is the undisputed champion of Cinnamon rolls.

Not having two specific types of pastry does not a lack of variety make.

you can't blame KK as the only one at fault, there are many many other "contributors" too, like fast food chains just to name one.

well, it wasn't their addictiveness that made the two companies similar, I am talking about brand image. Ppl think its cool to bring over a dozen of KK and bottles of Starbuck Frapps as gifts or after lunch snacks.
Ppl do so because KK and Starbuck's image is far superior than its competition, and that's why ppl buy them even though they cost more.

Thier cake doughnuts don't taste like old-fashioned donuts. They taste exactly like thier regular glazed donuts, but they look slightly different. And donut shops should sell cinamon rolls. They all do execpt for Krispy Kreme.

Frankly, I buy KK doughnuts because they really are the best in the area. I've yet to find a better glazed doughnut, at least in this area.

it's boston market all over again. i think the strategy of selling in grocery stores sort of backfired as well... cheapened the aura of the product.

starbucks is still booming because they still maintain high quality standards (except for locations inside Target) and coffee is still allowed on plenty of low-carb diets (south beach)

I see your point, but I think it's more than KK is much better than the competition than just image. All DD has are dry cake doughnuts. If I want a stale loaf of bread I'll head to Bi-Lo, thanks.

You must have a really crappy KK in your area. The Cake Doughnuts at our KK taste completely different, except for the glaze.

Since when must a doughnut shop sell cinnamon rolls?

Like I said, just because they don't have two (in this case one) specific type of pastry doesn't mean they have no variety.

It isn't Atkins that's bring down Krispy Kreme. IMO, KK screwed up and lost the vision of their original marketing plan, which was that they used to be rare and unusual for most of America. Now they are everywhere and the novelty is completely gone. Plus, they locked in their fixed overhead costs too high, with large overstaffed stores designed to handle the initial rush of business right after their grand openings, and not the regular day-to-day business months later.
And they stepped on a few toes with their many store openings too. For example, Krispy Kreme killed a popular 70 year-old breakfast diner (and landmark) to open their newest store in Portland. I (for one) am boycotting KK indefinitely, although it's no big deal as I had discovered that their donuts were pretty nasty anyway...

edit: the US, as a nation, is NOT fat. It's the fsckin' South that's full of lard asses... see the latest Time magazine. The West is slim and trim :)
