Atkins Diet

A diet based on eating no (or, in less extreme instances, very few, carbohydrates). Some swear by it.

I personally don't diet; exercise is all that I need. My dad has done it several times. The problem with it is that it can lead to very extreme kidney problems, from a condition that the Atkins diet relies on: keto-acidosis (ketones will be excreted in the urine). It worked for him, but he puts the weight back on, yo-yo style, whenever he quits. 😱

its a diet that is not for everyone....

look at it this way. if youve got the money and you can handle such a diet then do it...afterall a mostly protein diet is very expensive...carbs are so cheap and are almost in everything we eat and its cheap food that its hard to maintain the atkins diet.

I tried it for a while. I lost weight and inches, but it is hard to stick to. I really love carbohydrates, so eating protein all the time was difficult. I was craving pasta and potatoes! All that protein made my stomach upset too, so I think I ate less because I didn't feel very good. I would do it again if I needed to lose a little weight, but I couldn't do it for an extended period of time.

I've seen it work for some people, but I just couldn't stomach it. I made my own diet that seems to be just right for me... and it's really simple.

I've found that just cutting down on bread, sugar, potatoes, and pasta helps keep me slim.

Don't get me wrong: I still eat these things, but they make up a very small portion of my diet. My main diet consists of veggies, fruits, lean meats, nuts, and rice... I get carbs, but mostly complex carbs.

The more processed a food is, the worse it is for you. Stick to whole, fresh foods and you won't need a 'diet'.

Cheers and good health to you!

One thing it excels at is lower blood sugar levels.
I am a T2 diabetic that can control by just exercise and diet, actually enough of either works for me.

Atkins proposes almost no carbs during the weight loss phase and in the maintenance phase you keep adding carbs until you start gaining weight again. You have to really like meat and fat. In the first week on Atkins you'll drop a lot of water weight, usually 7 to 14 lbs for most people, and then most people lose a pound or two week after that. One other really noticable effect is that you dont get sleepy after meals.

When I first tried this to lower my blood sugar, I ate as much meat and fat as I could literally stand and still lost 30 lbs over 6 months. To stop the weight loss I had to add carbs back in my diet. Now I just dont eat most of carbs that come with meals, like fries and mashed potatoes, just a few bites and that's it.
