I heard that eating these Atkins protein bars, it makes you have unusual bowel movements.
Unusual BM? Please define a regular BM. You go when you go -- what's regular for one person isn't for another.
Unfortunately you are incorrect. The difference in BM per individual shouldnt differ "nearly" as extreme as it does. There isnt a "golden rule" but for all practical you should have at "least" one BM a day. If you dont you are either not eating enough, OR your eating the typical american diet of High-fat,highly processed grains and low fiber foods (white breads,meat...) I eat a diet with a large amount of fiber, I have BM 2-3 times a day usually (around meal times, makes sense, what goes in must come out right?) They only take me 20 seconds. Never any discomfort. Never ANY, and I mean ANY mess to clean up. Back when I used to eat a lot of junk food I thought life was all about irregular BM's loose stool and consitipation with no rythym or pattern...
I know several people on atkins, they have to drink fiber supplements 2-3 times a day and still have trouble having regular BM's... Personally I'm not sold on atkins at all... I'm sure there are specific places were it could be useful (like dropping 100lbs before you open bypass surgery... hhmmm wonder why they need a bypass in the first place, I bet it involved meat, hydrogenated oils and deep fryers...) But other then that I have a hard time thinking of a worse diet, I'm being serious. here lets see...
How can we design a diet that will maximize the amount of...
***Suffering caused to animals
***Waste involved with providing the most wasteful forms of nutrition (ie, meat,eggs,dairy... It takes 9 times the calories worth of grains/grasses to get 1 calorie of meat)
***The amount of fats we can consume (specifically saturated and hydrogenated, NO escaping this one)
***Pollution released to the enviroment (remember 9x the grains to feed the livestock to give a single unit of meat,milk,eggs... so that means 9x the pesticides, petroleum)
***Maximize colesterol intake by multiple times the recomended limit
***Maximize the amount of chemicals, pesticides, growth hormones you can injest (hhmm, funny how girls are having there periods at 10-11 years old now, ask your grandparents when was a usual time when they were young.... I'm almost more concerned about this stuff then the bad types of fats you eat!)
oh man I'm just getting started... Atkins = Lets die slowly, while we rape the planet. I mean come'on do you really expect to be able to eat all this "crap" eggs, cheese, flesh and have NO ill effects? theres no such thing as a free lunch, Or having your cake and eating it too. I really dont care what someone else does to there body, its theres to do with as they wish. But dont go and destroy my planet, pollute my water and enslave my fellow earthbound bretheren because you dont have the will power to truly manage your own deit.
Did you know that last year north america and eroupe fed MORE calories worth of grains/oats/grasses to live stock then would have been needed to give every human on planet earth the appropriate amount of calories to live.? sure your lacking some important vitamines and minerals. But the calorie is the most important unit of energy for life. And we could have fed the world with what we wasted on getting a few hundred million people there rump roasts and prime ribs. I hope you think about that next time savor the still blood red juice for your medium rare, flame kissed sirloin. And if that really doesnt bother you then eat up, and just get this over with you might survive the first triple bypass... but that second is a doozy...
Ok Ok, that was a little harsh and I appologize. I get pretty worked up about this all the time, it only takes a few what I consider to be inaccurate posts to set me off. OF course I admit not every book I've read will be 100% correct nor will my opiononis be 100% objective.
My nutritional background is short but intense. I've only been independantly studing nutrition for the last year or so. I've read a LARGE number of books on the subject and usually spend a few (and a few too many sometimes) hours a day reading forums, medical journals and books.
I am 5'9" jan 1st of this year I weight 240lbs. I was fed up and sick of gaining weight and having no energy. It was terrible. So I got serious about controlling my diet. Unforunately for the first couple months i had little sucess controll my urges or my portions. Finnaly I was so frustrated and had been reading alot of information on "radical" dietary changes. about the end of febuary the begin'ing of march I made a decision to:
"Quit" eating all meats (fish included)
STRONGLY avoid hydrogenated oils and shortenings.
Strongly avoid eggs and dairy (hard to do, theres traces every were)
Exercise more
55lbs later I feel good. I can run 2 miles without stopping, my stomach problems went away. I can sprint as fast as I did in high school (and I'm still 15lbs heavier!) I dont have any bowel problems. My back pain went away. I never fall asleep at work anymore. I dont require as much sleep. the list goes on...
So yeah I'm baised. All I did was quiting eating wastful over processed crap and animal products. I feel like superman somtimes (hense my animosity towards advice that would have prevented me from having so much sucess) And no the exercise ISNT the reason. I have exercised a bit but its been by no means regular or consitant, for example in the last three weeks I havent been able to exercise AT ALL. but I've still lost nearly 2lbs a week (solid pounds. not just fluctuation) I'm never hungry either, I dont really worry about the amount i eat. because theres very little "bad" stuff in what I have. (I understand that bad is/can be subjective. I'm talking abotu hydrogenated oils, saturated fats, colesterol..)
its late my wife is getting irritated that I'm not in bed yet, I've got band practice at 9am and I have to drive 50 miles one way, ARG!
*puts on flame vest*
Well, the Atkins diet does get a ton of heat from people who don't understand the diet, such as yourself. I've been finding I eat just as much protein as I did before I was on the diet. People think "oh you can eat all the meat you want on Atkins!" Not true. The maximum amount of any protein they reccomend at one sitting is 8 oz's. Also, the Atkins diet demands staying away from ANY and ALL hydrogenated oils. Anymore, its not a diet, it is a "nutritional approach". I understand the part about the waste caused by processing meats, and I know it is true. I won't try and defend myself on that one, but in my own defense I try and buy meat from local suppliers, rather than the supermarket. I'm not trying to flame here, I am just suggesting anyone who tries to put down the Atkins nutritional approach do their research first. You come off sounding really ignorant to us people who know what Atkins is all about 🙂
