Atitool Artifact Testing, how long is enough?

I've heard all kinds of numbers ranging from 5 minutes to several hours, how long do you guys think is sufficient for artifact testing in atitool? Also, is atitool 100% effective for testing overclock stability?

Currently have my shiny new bfg gtx 280 oc @ 729/1512/2600 and going strong after 15 minutes, gonna push for higher. I realize for processors you want a good 12 hours or so but is it different with video cards?

Most people would prefer to use furmark for stability testing. Either way, you should run it for HOURS. Do you only game for 12 minutes?

My 8800GT will run furmark without a sweat but will lock up after about 8 hours of straight gaming.

I usually run it around 1 hour. If it passes that, then I'll game several hours straight and see if I'm getting any visual artifacts or crashes.

What I've noticed about ATI tool is that it usually fails at detecting artifacts or instability problems, when it comes to Vram. It's perfect for the GPU, but it can totally fail for the memory. I once passed 4 hours of ATi tool with my 8800 GT's memory at 2.2 ghz, but I got an instant red screen in Mass Effect.

Thanks for the advice on furmark, never had heard of it before . Had to scale some things back and in the end got 713/1458/2664 stable with furmark @1920x1200 +extra heatburn. Not too shabby imo.

Ya...Crysis is the Ultimate Video Card Stability Tool (UVCST)...

Seriously though...FurMark I would say is the best.

I never used furmark before until today and I am gonna say it is the best.
It just looks like it puts alot more stress on the video card then ati tool does.

There is alot going on with furmark and I just found a new overclocking tool to use. Thanks for this thread guys

Sorry for the basic question but I am new at this. How do you use 3dmark to find the artifacts? Does it find and signal them or do you just watch for distortions? Also for stability testing do you just run it and see if it crashes?

Previously I have only overclocked my CPU/FSB and I am used to Prime95 which reports any errors to you.

Thanks for all the help.

What I have bolded, are the answers. 3dmark is more of a benchmark that a stability tool.

Furmark, atitool, etc. are better for stability testing.
