ATItool accuracy

Basically my question is how accurate is ATITool on finding your max core/mem clocks? I seem to be able to play 5mhz core over what it detects as my max on atitool. I cant see any visual artifacts, but maybe im wrong. I had been using powerstrip to oc my 9800p to 413mhz core (incase it matters)

Anyone else have any opionions/experiance with this program?

It's pretty bad. Nvidia's autodetect is slightly better, but it sucks too.

IME the latest version is very accurate w/ my 9700PRO. I had already determined my max overclocks on my own over the past year of tweaking, and it basically confirmed what I had the card set at.

It was accurate for my 9800Pro. When I used 3DMark2K3 and bumped core/mem up to the point of video errors ATITool peaked right in the same area. However, I've heard (read) some others who warned you can fry your card with it.

So should i just do it based on multiple runs of Farcry/Halo/3dmark like ive been doing and then test it for a few hrs on games of choice? Its always worked in the past, but i was wondering if this would just be a more definate answer to the overclocking problem.

I never used the find max core/memory thing, but ATITool was very good at finding errors that slipped by me when using 3dmark.

It does take a while, but I haven't let mine finish, I just bumped up to 9800 XT speeds and am letting my system check itself while gaming and running benchmarks. No problems yet.

I think I did fry my card with ATI Tool. I even had a VGA silencer on it too... but it started artifacting at stock. Had to get it replaced. 🙁 Maybe just bad luck? A lot of people seem to have good experiences with ATI tool.

ATI tool artifacts, how do you know it's artifacting?

It will tell you if it's artifacting. What you see on-screen is irrelevant AFAIK.
