Pretty interesting review imo. It shows in the newer games that these cards really do see a good improvement in performance with faster and 512MB of ram.

We don't know if it's the extra memory or the speed, I'm leaning on the speed. While overall the X1800XT handle the AA and FSAA a bit better than the GTX, I don't think the difference is stellar.

I doubt the 512 RAM is doing as much as you think; I'd say that the x1800XT's excellent AA performance is mostly due to the fast RAM, which begs the question: what's stopping nVidia from releasing their 512 GTX with some of this faster RAM as well? I'd love to see what the numbers are when they have equivalent RAM.

All I noticed is that with a couple exceptions (Doom 3, Riddick for NV - Battlefield 2, Splinter Cell for ATi) neither card ran away from the other under any resolution or AA/AF load.

This generation is just like last generation - a full blown tie where price, *availability*, and personal preferences for certain games will decide purchasing decisions. Provided ATi can actually get their parts to retail (I have my doubts) we should see some nice competition.

That's pretty much accurate, Insom...as much as people were excited about Oct. 5, I'm more curious about Oct. 11, when the x1800XL's are supposed to ship. Last generation a date of shipping from ATi was proven to be pretty much worthless, I hope this time they are following through. If we don't even have XL's by next week I'm calling it vapor.

all u do is comparing frames per second...ati implemented some great new image quality and filtering features, obviously ppl have to see with their own eyes before they recognize the differences between NV and ATI regarding image quality...

What is the deal with the cards switching color lines every page? I'm trying to follow a 6800gt performance and I have to read the legend on each chart. Why must I be so lazy...

Yeah, that part threw me off a few times, but at least they kept the same colors for the x1800 and the 7800.

Nice update. I am happy that Derek included 1920x1200 in the benchmarks, it is a good move and I hope that other sites follow AT on that.

It is interesting to see how the performance of some higher level cards fall after 1600x1200. Anyone buying WS monitors should pay attention to this.

I was not conviced that the X1800XT was better performer than the 7800GTX, but looking at the WS high resolutions and AA+AF that pretty much settles the discussion.

I hope also that the next article checks the famous "shimmering" effect.
Does the R520 family handles this issue better than the G70?

Doesn't Derek know that we're all Pavlovian Dogs?

green bars = nVidia
red bars = ATI

Thats exactly what im thinking.

I would like to see later on with the arrival of the more GPU and bandwidth intensive games how the 7800GTX and X1800XT stack up.

Also it will also be quite interesting to see how the X1800XT does with GDD4 Ram as it is said that the X1800XT is designed to run with these when they are out.
