I know of a few games that use the old version of truform, but what about the truform 2.0? When will we(if ever) see at least half of the new games support this?

I wanna see what it can do.

that's one of those features now lampooned by critics. I thought UT2K3's use of it was awesome althought he performance hit was way too high.

HL2 might be the best bet, but I doubt it. People complained that the textures would assume grossly bulbuous character.

But isn't truform 2.0 software based? Wouldn'tthat make it slower than the truform used by the 8500 which was hardware rendered?

Yes. It's not a viable option unless you have an extremely powerful CPU in most cases. It's actually a very nice feature and it's a shame that it never really caught on. RTCW made good use of it on my 8500.

no, here is how it works.

r200 and rv250 have hardware based truform 1.0

r300 and up have software based truform 1.0 and hardware 2.0, but there is no 2.0 games out, so it always uses the 1.0 software.

not sure something about continuous tesselation of models inside a game or textures or something basically stops things like characters having octagnol heads n stuff i think or at least tried to reduce it

Makes digital boobies rounder.

exactly. It simply adds some polys to make something smoother pretty much.

lol!
Yeah, it increases the polygon count on the characters and makes all the edges rounder and smoother.
I really like this feature, I hope games will adopt it in the future.

Are you sure about that? My understanding was that trueform 2.0 adds continuous and adaptive tessellation to the fixed tesselation of trueform 1.0, however its a software solution. I could be mis-understanding the tech since I wrote it off after they did away with hardware support, but that was my understanding.

Yes im sure, I read it in a hardware review of the 9700 pro, think infact it was this site's one.

Yes, I'm pretty sure you're right too. I was unaware that TruForm 2.0 was done in hardware simply because in UT2004 it is done in software. It doesn't make sense that TruForm 1.0 is not supported in hardware on R300, and I doubt 2.0 will ever be used. Proprietary videocard features rarely gain widespread acceptance.

I'm pretty certain Truform 2.0 is a software implementation. However if you could link to an article describing it otherwise that would be cool. My understanding was that ATI decided its transistor count was too costly and dropped it from hardware. It would be kinda silly to offer Truform 2.0 in hardware yet not be backward compatable with truform 1.0.

Here are some confusing relative threads, you tell me?

The effects of truform are quite staggering. The differences on the tree alone on the above pictures posted by Ackmed are signifigant.

It looks like it could be a great graphics feature if they could sort out the performance issues. Hardware solutions are for the most part more effective than software solutions. The problem is that no-one really supports Truform to a decent extent and therefore a possibly great technology slips by the way-side.

Perhaps this is a technology before its time. Would be sad to see such a graphically enhancing feature be passed up.
