ATi's next GPU generation ?

Hi to everyone.

I'd like to know if it has been said when and what will be ATi's next generation of Graphics cards ?

Namely, the X900 series, right ?

Any rumors or facts / confirmations ?

I'm really looking forward to upgrade from my 9800 Pro to that next generation, whenever it comes out. The X800 series is quite tempting, but I can resist, and I am patient, very patient. All I hope is ATi still making AGP versions of their next generation GPU products.

Any comments on this ?

Thanks for your time all.

Peace.

i heard that the r4xx are the last agp parts. not sure who though. though there probably be bridge chips, that will make the agp version cost more.

Somehow I doubt that that ATI's next generation will come in AGP. ATI seems to be pushing pretty hard for PCI-e. The next generation chip, the R520, has no confirmed name yet. But it will have SM3.0, proabably a version of SLI (ATI calls it "AMR"), a possibility of 512mb memory, and 24 pixel pipelines.

When they can't even ship their current generation (high end) products in any kind of decent volume, I don't think they need to be working towards yet another paper launch...

I see. Well...

I asked, because I'm currently choosing new parts for my upgrade.

My current system is as follows: P IV 2.6C / ASUS P4P800 / Kingston KVR PC-3200 C3A 1024 MB Dual-Channel 2.5-2-2-5 / ATi 9800 Pro 128 MB 256-Bit

And I want to upgrade, for a somewhat better "gaming focused" system.

After a few days of research, I come to two conclusions, two choices. Of course based on my budget.

#1: AMD 64 3500+ 90nm / ASUS A8V-E Deluxe / (Same Memory as above) / ATi X800 XL PCI-Express
#2: AMD 64 3500+ 90nm / ASUS A8V Deluxe / (Same Memory as above) / (Same GPU as above)

As you guys can see I'm still not sure, if I want to switch to PCI-Express or not. If not, then I will keep my 9800 Pro, and probably buy one of the X800 series AGP-based GPU later. Or, if I switch to PCI-Express now, then, get the X800 XL when it's available here in Quebec, and then wait much later this year or even early 2006 for a potential upgrade to another GPU.

I presume the first choice, a PCI-Express based Motherboard, would give me more potential, and could be considered as an investment for future upgrades. While on the other hand, if I stay with AGP still, then later, if I would ever be tempted by PCI-Express technology, then I'd have to buy a new Motherboard.

What would you guys think ?

Because I'm still not sure.

The "X900" series will probably natively be PCIe and be bridged to AGP like they did with the 6600 GT.

yes, it would be sucicide to switch to a PCIe version only line within the next year. After that, I can maybe see it happening...but AGP diffenately still has life. It would be a safe bet that their next gen cards will come in an AGP flavor.
