ATI's new FUDO GPU (TBA 2005?) goes SM 3.0

It's totally unnecessary, unless we have a product that supports it. ;)

Though it's kind of a given that ATI would go to Shader Model 3.0, given that the NV40 gains ~33% over SM2.x using SM3.0*; ATI may be very strong in DX9 and SM2.x in particular, but they can't afford to have nVidia getting the same (if not better) IQ with higher speed using SM3.0.

*Yes, it's a recalled patch, and yes, it's only in certain situations, but the code is rudimentary in FarCry and isn't incorporated into an engine written entirely in SM3.0. Not to mention that the Unreal 3 engine will use SM3.0, which means ATI has to upgrade.

Sorry to disagree . . . the X-box2 of which ATI makes the GPU for (r500) relys heavily on Shader 3.0.

IF ati didn't release a GPU supporting it, game programmers would have to use nVidia GPUs. :p

not sure . . . that would make it "late", wouldn't it.

Ati has a habit of skipping numbers . . . perhaps they are releasing 520 next (after year end's 480 refresh) instead of 500.

no idea . . try ing to keep track of ati and nvidia's "secret" roadmaps starts to get confusing , , , and with the paperlaunches . . . meaningless. ;)

edit: Yep . . . no r500 (i guess the 20 adds shader 3.0) . . . 520 instead . . . next year and supposedly a big jump over the x800xt performancewise.

R520 is the next chip that will come after R480 Q4 speed update of R420/423 marchitecture and it will represent the chip with new features with at least Shader model 3.0 support

Well atleast ati is acknowledging sm3.0's necessity. I dont agree that nv wasted its time in making a sm3.0 card and "wasting" their money.

R400 was initially gonna be the Xbox 2 card and the r420 was going to be our card for
PC, but they scraped the r400 for the xbox and started work on the r500 for the xbox and we are getting teh r520

This is disappointing as I was hoping ATi would go well beyond the SM 3.0 spec w/ R500. Hopefully they still may do this seeing as this "news" is very preliminary.

Ive been hearing rumours that they it will go to SM4, but i really think thats a bit to much of a big step to do, as we only have 1 full enabled SM3 game, and a few partially enabled SM3 games which are coming out in the next year or so.

Why bother? . . . games are NOT using 4.0 for quite some time to come . . . and that's what r580(?)/r600 is for. ;)

well it'll probably come around when SM3.0 games actually starts to benefit from SM3.0 over 2.0
