30 FPS in Halo at 1024x768! That's quite good result for card designed for notebooks

wow .. just wow. ..

that's a monster card. i can only imagine if ATI got into making chipsets for AMD and have an onboard Radeon 9700 with an optional PCI- Express slot for a video card.

Now I can't brag about my laptop's Mobility 9600... :(
EDIT: Looks good, hopefully Nvidia can come up with something better than the 5700 Go to match up against the Mobility 9700.

What is the power usage? Andrew Ku says that the 9700 will have a lot of "design wins" for desktop replacements, which kind of worries me. Gaming performance is great, but if the Mobility 9700 uses a ton more power, I might want to stay away from M11 laptops.

Hopefully this means laptops with the Mobility 9600 should be coming down in price

Wouldnt ATI's own power management kick in whilst not 3D accelerating?

Yeah, but I'm wondering how well it works. Some chips have better power management than others.

Fortunately, ATI has a good record on this. However, nVidia has been known to release higher performance chips with much worse power characteristics than previous chips.

Anyways, I'm hoping the power characteristics of M11 will be good and I can get one in my next laptop. :)

The power specs are basically the same as the Mobility Radeon 9600 GPU.

This is far from a desktop Radeon 9700. As tom indicated, its more similar to a desktop Radeon 9600 XT.

Eh, I don't think the PowerBook line is due for a refresh any time soon.;)

This is one of two titles in our benchmark suite that provided the Mobility Radeon 9700 with a sub 10% margin. This doesn't seem to be the normal scenario, except for a few titles in lower resolutions. When we get to the 1280x1024 resolution, the margin jumps 17% (from 9% to 36%).

Typo?

Actually it's due soon though. The last update was Sept. 2003 (5 months ago). I predict a G5 PowerBook by summer.

Mind you a G5 1.6 PowerBook with Radeon 9700 won't be too great of a gaming machine. I wonder if it'd be worth it to wait until 2005 to get a new laptop. I have a warranty on my current laptop until almost 2006.
