All-in-Wonder resurrected


AMD has announced that it is resurrecting its All-in-Wonder series, this time as a high-definition piece of hardware called ATI All-in-Wonder HD.

Based on the derived RV635 (HD 3650) core made in 55nm technology, this PCI-Express 2.0 capable card comes with 120 stream processors, and works at 725MHz for the core and 600MHz for DDR2 memory paired up with a 128-bit memory interface.

This single slot multimedia beast can receive analog (NTSC), digital/HDTV (ATSC) and unencrypted digital cable (ClearQAM) signals with time shifting functionality. As every other tuner card out there, ATI's new AIW is capable of receiving FM radio station signal.

Beside the coaxial port, the card also comes with a single dual-link DVI and an HDMI port capable of passing the video and a 5.1 channel digital surround audio. The new AIW will also come with an ATI AIW HD Accessory kit which gives additional connectivity options, but this one might be sold separately.

A while ago we were told that that the AIW series will be revived as soon as they are back on their feet and as soon as they have a product worthy of the AIW series. This card is the current "Holy Grail" of HTPC systems, and we sincerely hope that ATI is working on an HD 4800 AIW card.

According to the press release from DAAMIT, Diamond Multimedia and VisionTek should be first to start selling these in late July with a price tag of US$199.

I won't 😛. I already have the standalone version of their HD Tuner. AMD really needs to devote some people to work on that Catalyst Media Center software. It just does not feel very polished and stable compared to regular ole Windows Media Center.

Hey, so, looking at that picture, it's got a fan and it's standard height...methinks a passive and low profile version would be more appealing for HTPC enthusiasts?
 
5.1 Sound? As I understand it, the new 4850 and 4870 do 7.1 over HDMI. Why would they do any less on an AIW?

Sounds great but I just pre-ordered my 4870 (out in the UK tomorrow) and just got Virgin Media V+ HD Box in for my TV/Radio.
 
Well, this is *supposed* to be based on the HD3650. So maybe that is why.

I have been wanting to pick up a tuner card anyway. Maybe ill wait for this one. Since it is by a well-known company.

Are you going to try to Franken-Fire it together with your 4870 :laugh:?
 
Yes, let's market this to the HTPC crowd and put a tiny whirring little anemic fan to cool everything. I'll stick with my passive X2600Pro (HDMI with H.264 assist) and HT Omega Striker (Dolby Digital, DTS decode).
 
Was awesome.
Then I got to the end and saw "$199"
And it became a lot less awesome. I would have expected/hoped for $100~$150 considering it's only an HD3650, which can be had for under $50 AR.
 
Hot damn. I think my original Radeon 256 AIW is still in the attic somewhere. I got a lot of use out of it, but it is difficult to replace - I held onto it for many years until I absolutely needed a faster GPU.

Years later, they now have the benefit of a serious market for HTPC products, hence why it's only a 3650 under the hood. Lower power, low heat, low noise, and a ton of features packed into a small space. These have far more potential for success than they did 8 years ago. 🙂
