ATI X800XT PE catches up with Nvidia SLI score

ATI MADE A wonder driver that we reported about here and this is how the fight for the 3Dmark05 crown started. When Nvidia saw that it would lose to the X800XT PE, it had to react fast and it introduced an SLI score based on two Geforce 6800 Ultra and managed to score approximately 7200 points. We reported about that here.

As ATI just could not leave it at that, some of its friends did some frenzied overclocking and managed first to come close to Nvidia's number, then later that day to equal it, then first to outperform it and finally significantly outpace it. You can check the highest score so far based on an ATI card here.

This score was brought to the world by the famous Finnish overclocker Sami Makkinen, the guy that did the overclocking for ATI in Barcelona at the X800XT PE, XT and PRO introduction.

He happens to be one of the few people to have X800XT PE, still almost a mythic card, a veritable hen's tooth.

Anyway he used dry ice to get that kind of score and that?s not something that you can run 24 by 7, but those numbers can still be used for marketing purposes to impress the crowd who clamour for gladiators and bread. ATI will come to the conclusion that its X800XT PE card is a better performer than two Nvidia 6800 Ultra SLI cards, but may forget to remind you that Nvidia cards are default clocked while its is heavily overclocked. If 806MHz clock is not high, I don?t know what is. The default clock of RX800XT PE is only 520MHz.

What's next? Nvidia overclock two of their cards and release the numbers? I would not be surprised at all as long as we have Gainward standing at Nvidia's side. Benchmarketing. We invented the term. µ

* WE ARE informed that Sami used a Cascade Compressor system to cool the graphics card and this setup can actually run twenty four hours a day.

Oh! I see now, very interesting. :D

So I guess nvidia well do the same thing with duel 6800 Ultra's overclock.

That's true, but some n00bs will buy this benchmark.

The subtitle should be "with *extremely* OCed system and GPU," not "with Cat 4.10." The drivers didn't boost his XTPE to an 800MHz core, and I'm sure his CPU isn't exactly stock, either. :p

No, I am pretty sure it was all the cat 4.10 drivers. My 9700pro will likely get 4000 with these wonder drivers.

I bought the proorb..........hehe I don't have to run CPU test either. It aint that bad it has a lot of card crushing tests.....

The way I see it is SWdevolpers are in bed with IHD's and wont push like the Finn buddys.

We all have POS incremental cards...

Id be intrested to see how much this overclocking setup cost , compared to buying 2 gf6800Us plus a motherboard that supports SLI (id imagine that costs around 1300)

Look at it this way - who cares about 3dMark? I hope FutureMark just dies.

There's an overclocked ultra that's not that far behind, if two of those were in SLI, it'd blow the XT score away. Then again, that's two cards vs. one, albeit there are overhead losses, still not exactly a fair fight.

except that you can't SLI two overclocked cards. they require perfect sync, and any discrepancy in performance caused by out-of-spec parameters would cause them, well, to be out-of-sync.

edit: actually I take that back, these guys say it is possible:

Wait till people start using 2 of the X800XTPE PCIe in the dual card Alienware systems or who ever releases a board that support ATI cards also.

ATI won't have the option for SLI on their X800 cards.
