ATI X800

They have like three main models for their cards:
X800Pro, X800XL, and X800GTO.

What's the difference between these models and which is the most bang for the buck. I haven't had too many opportunities to see what the shortcomings are of any of these and would like to buy a replacement for my x300 pretty soon. Thanks.

Straight out of the box. The X800XL is hands down the fastest card there. 16-pipes, but bad overclocker, generally speaking.

The X800Pro and X800GTO have only 12-pipes, but generally have much better overclocking headroom, usually allowing them to exceed X800XL speeds.

Out of those three I would choose the X800XL if you're not going to overclock, or only modestly overclock --- OR--- the X800GTO if you want to overclock the card to the limits.

An alternative is to find a Connect3D X800GTO, those have a chance of unlocking and overclocking giving you X850XT PE speeds. The Connect3D's used to all unlock, but I think the newest batches don't unlock. Try and find a used one that unlocks on the FS/FT forum. That is your best abng for the buck.

Otherwise, try and find a X800GTO^2 for cheap. Those are guaranteed to unlock and overclock.

I had a X800 Pro, and it would overclock like mad and out run the XL and the GTO

If you're not afraid of unlocking pipes and OC'ing, then the gto2 is the best bang for buck card right now.

Nice bump in memory(GDDR2), but isn't that slower RAM than what's in the 256meg(GDDR3) version? I'm out of the loop on this stuff anymore. I just remember the old days when things were simple...

I read the reviews on the GTO2... Were there a lot of these that caused system problems? I'm not that confident in Saphire myself, but have heard good things about them.

Those blue gto2s have the r430 core, not the r480 core FYI.
