I don't like the fact that some people can't change. Nvidia has been better in the past, so they won't try a superior card from ATI.
Seriously it doesn't matter what name it is for me, ATI or Nvidia. The better card wins out for me. The X800 is the better card at the moment, I'm going to wait 2 months let all the mids come out, let the price drop and then make a decision.
If you say the 6800 has a fuller feature set, I think you won't utilize it. X800 has the performance crown.

The real issue here is 6800GT vs X800Pro, where $ and power consumption are a bit more reasonable. I was more impressed by the GT's numbers than any other card.

I dont if the poll was properly thought out for comparison.. the new ATI XT verses the NV 6800 Ultra?
I think the 6850 is meant to be competition for the XT.
Traditionally, the companies have positioned their PRO versus the ULTRA.

Regardless, Id go with the 6800 Ultra. It will be cheaper than the 800XT. It also has 3.0 vertex and pixel shaders. The 800XT runs away from everything in a few benchmarks but I dont think it'd be worth it to pay more, and lose 3.0 shaders. They look neck and neck and that for me makes the distinction.

wouldn't say the performance was a "dead heat"...it looks like the x800 beats the 6800 by a decent margin on some engines, and loses by a decent margin on others

Isnt that the same thing as a dead heat? :)

Being an Atifanatic I have to admit the 6800GT looks mighty nice. I think the poll should have all the available Ati / nVidia vers. available to vote on.

Well the only ones available for retail anytime soon is the X800 pro and the 6800U right? Bah.

I really wouldn't buy either because of the costs, but if pressed I'd go with the 6800GT. The games I play are mainly OpenGL based, and in that scenario its no contest. Plus, Nvidia has good support with Linux, which I swtich to when I'm not playing games. Although the 2 slot 6800U is faster, I don't like the idea of using 2 slots and 2 molex. I have a 9800Pro and ti4200 now, and to be honest I don't see that much difference in image quality, so aside from knowing that its faster, it wouldn't justify a purchase of the x800 series because of the OpenGL performance. Looking towards Doom3, it would seem that the 6800 series will be a better card. Who knows when HL2 will come out...for me thats in the Duke Nukem Forever category. Even in DirectX games, the performance seems about the same between the cards. I don't know what the point of running 1600x1200 4AA/8AF would be, since the 1600x1200 resolution makes anti aliasing somewhat mute.

X800 XT for me as well. Because of its smaller power requirements, its single slot design. Its performance is on par with the 6800 Ultra and in many cases, surpasses it.

Basically the same for me for the X800XT. My biggest problem is I love to game as much as I can under linux, and while NV does lack in feature support, their 3d linux support is far better than ATI's IME, so I'm sorta stuck. If I can afford it, and the drivers for linux are decent, I will go X800XT, if the drivers aren't decent, I'll be looking at an FX5900.

I've got no feelings towards nVidia or ATI; I've used both cards in the past. Currently, I am leaning towards the X800XT. The reasons are the following:

1. Single molex required
2. Single slot
3. Lower power consumption (lower than the 9800XT apparently)

Both have their plus and minus, and I will be playing both Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 once they are finished (in other words, when hell freezes over).. I don't think the performance differences we see between the two cards are enough to warrant that much worry, IMHO. But hey, whatever works for people.

I have an Antec Truepower480, and my 12-volt molex are limited. nVidia's power requirements are a relic from the 3dFX engineering; that's my only caveat with those guys right now. Both ATI and nVidia's drivers are fine; it really just boils down to the 3 points I listed.

And yeah, I'll drop $500 USD on one. I'm an impatient bastard.

Cheers,

If I want to shell out hella cash the x800 XT is the best choice. If you use linux or just dont want to empty your wallet the nvidia 6800 GT is very affordable and offers performance very close to a 6800 Ultra. Keep in mind the GT has all 16 pipes enabled while ati value card has but 12 going. As for linux users .... d3d aint running on linux anytime soon... so nvidia is definitly the way to go.

I'd have to go with the x800 Pro.

1) single slot (although there will probably be single slot solutions for nVidia eventually)
2) low power consumption(my PSU is an Antec True330)
3) singe molex

I'm not exactly original in my reasons, but whatever ;)

The fact 6850 Needed to come out unexpectedly means ATI won the first round of the new fight; and it's no coincident that Nvidia rushed out beta forceware right before NDA of R420.

If I were to buy right now, I am 84.3% sure I would get the X800XT. I think its the better card, especially with high AA/AF on. The CoD benchmark is the only thing that has me worried. I like CoD.. but its probably going to be one of the, if not the last Q3 game to come out. If Doom3 and the other Doom3 engine games afterwards have the same performance lead for the 6800U, it might be enough to sway me to get it.

I dont give a flying flip about PS 3.0, as it will look the same. We dont know how either card is going to do in one, and wont know for some time.

Same - although in the poll I voted for 6800U as a proxy.

When I do buy it there will have to be a new motherboard in the mix too, since my 4x AGP motherboard probably wouldn't like either card very much.

I'm not worried about my PSU, I suspect my Antec 430W True will be just fine, regardless of what the "reccomended" value is.

That is entirely opinionated crap. What matters is what u can buy when, and how much it currently costs. Ati was going to release a 12 pipe card and the XT wasnt going to come out for along time, and for that matter after it was going to come out, it was going to be SLOWER then it already is. Its all the same crap, just reactions to one another. There is no "round" like many people like to call it. You cant say that the first thing u lay on the table is your offer, especially if it isnt out yet. What good are numbers anyways? Who knows what u can buy after the XT/6800 is actually released in the market. I mean maybe either company will have another card benchmarked by the time u can actually buy these cards. If this trend follows, based on your logic, you can NEVER own the fastest card.
