I would choose the ATI x800 XT Platinum Edition because it outperforms the Nvidia 6800. It's also smaller and doesn't use as much power. Another plus is that the x800 XT is quieter.

What would you choose? I know the 6850 is comming out soon but rumours are that it's just an overclocked 6800. Who knows, maybe the new card might be able to take ATI's crown. :)

Won't really know until I have money and can actually think about buying either.... :p

I don't know about all these "price wars" people are predicting though, I think ATI and Nvidia are going to price these new cards as high as they want for quite a while, unfortunately.

Depends on how hot the Nvidia runs and if I really do have to spend more money on a new PSU. Crap, I spent 80 dollars all ready a few months back on a Antec 430 watt. Odds are if the prices are right I'll be picking ATI yet again this year.

I wouldn't pick either...they're going to be too damned expensive

I'm not sure, I really really really want to upgrade but I won't need a new card until T:V gets here (of which I won't need a new card but it would be really nice to have one). But by then there will probably be refreshes of these cards and I'll probably end up with a Radeon X800 due to its slight performance advantage with DX9 titles, otherwise right now I'd probably swing GeForce 6800 for my OpenGL games. It's a tough call, I really don't think you can make a wrong choice this time around.

wtf, take a chill pill, this is the video forum, some people here don't check General Hardware when we are looking for topics on video.

I would go ati. These performance numbers we have seen are hiding something. It appears when you enable the full 8AA and 16AF on both cards the nvidia nv40 takes a huge performance plunge and the
X800 XT is 4x faster than the nv40. check it out here at Hexus

I'm gonna have to say the x800. After reading about the architectural differences... and seeing as how nVidia hasn't corrected the image quality problem in Far Cry... and seeing as how the x800 uses so much less power... as long as their drivers aren't extremely buggy, or the price isn't rediculous... I can't see why I would want a 6800. If the 6800GT drops down under $250 soon, I'd probably get that, assuming the x800 Pro doesn't drop down closer to $200 =)

ATI. still good.

Tom's hardware tested IQ.

Nvidia has less of a performance hit with AA, but AF brings them down by a lot. When enabling both ATI would stand at a higher frame rate or equal.

NVIDIA just implemented their new crappier AF methodology (ATis) on this gen of cards, so its most likely driver immaturity causing the performance dive. If you turn off AF the cards are very very close in performance under AA.

8X AA always delivered crappy performance numbers. Looks nice as hell though.

WOW.... Ok, its your opinion. I will be buying a 6800, although I do not know which version. Both the X800XT and the 6800U are a bit pricey. But if I were to choose between them, 6800U.

My reasons:

Historically, Nvidia has been more stable and compatable for me. Drivers and hardware wise.

Performance difference between X800XT and 6800U is a dead heat. If the X800XT significantly outperformed the 6800U, that would be a different story, but it did not if at all depending on the benchie.

Already have a power supply that can handle it.

PS3.0 compliant ( I believe when PS3.0 developed games come out, I will notice performance advantage over the R420 architecture in that same game, like I said, I believe. So its enough to sway me.)

Mpeg encoding (Dont know if I'll ever use this, but its a cool feature nontheless.)

Dont have a shuttle (had one, but sold it because of the noise level, sits on desktop not on floor)

Dont like Far Cry ( Which ATI crushed NV in frames and IQ, but that will be fixed over time) Dont know if I will ever buy the game. Maybe a cheap used one down the road if Crytek and NV work it out.

Newer technology. From scratch architecture with young drivers. Only room for improvement.

Image quality (Except for FarCry) is now either equal or slightly better that ATI (according to some review sites.) ATI has great IQ, but now NV has caught up and then some. I am judging this with my own eyes and screenshots comparing 5950, 9800XT, 6800U and X800XT. NV is in ATI's league with IQ now.

I am sure there are other reasons but this post in getting long.

Performance appears to pretty much a dead heat from what I can tell. From there I look at features the 6800 beats the X800 hands down there.

ATI looks better. PS3.0 is nice but is probably useless. Performance for PS3.0 has to be way below then similar 2.0 shader (well it definetly can't be faster). I heard that NVidia warned game developers not to expect good performance for this card generation using PS3.0..
ATI probably took a smarter aproach as PS3.0 is just too much for current hardware to handle so for now they just concentrated on having best 2.0 shader performance.

Having said that I would like to get NVidia anyway to code my own PS3.0 shaders, but not at these prices (at 399$ for Ultra then maybe). I am not sure how much lower can NVidia go since they have a huge chip. Gotta be expensive to make it. :-( ATI migh keep their price too kowning that NVidia is unable to lower their's.

I wouldn't say the performance was a "dead heat"...it looks like the x800 beats the 6800 by a decent margin on some engines, and loses by a decent margin on others. What that suggests to me is that now, more so than in the past, it is important to look at your favorite games and upcoming titles, and decide which card will run better. nVidia's got the Quake engine (and probably Doom III), ATI's got Unreal, half-life, and maybe a couple others.

I will not buy any of those but if i had the money i would take the X800 , first is smaler , one molex , single slot , draw less power and can be easy carried in Lan , second is faster and better in D3D and the future is D3D ,....FarCry , HL2 , TF2 , CS2 ,Stalker , next UT , flight sims , next Thief series and etc ,...ogl in the other side we will have doom 3 , a engine who is more for small rooms and me love big maps . Games based on the Quake III have no future anymore , the engine is more or less obsolete compeared with a D3D engine like FarCry and next releases .
Third factor is because ATI has the edge and better speed in AA and is very playable with 6AA/AF enabled .
So if i had the money i would buy the X800XT .

X800XT.
Smaller, needs less power (I'm at the limit so would probably have to buy a new PSU even for the X800XT)
I like ATi
It performs best in the games I like (Don't like Quake games much, tried JK2, Quake3, CoD was OK though).
Plus I've never had any problems with ATi and drivers (or nVidia), so drivers are a non-issue for me.
