well, if you notice that they use HQ driver setting and extreme resolutions, then you can see why. Keep in mind that though all cards have it in mind, the x1k series especially had high resolutions in mind. The x1950 has more bandwith and faster mem for high resolutions. Also, the 7950 has an SLI component to its drivers=SLI scaling (~ ok)

I don't like how they did their reviews. Kind of reminds me of how HardOCP does theirs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they seem to pick what they think works best for each card instead of straight out benchmarking them with similar settings.

Yeah that's it. They pick things more to my personal experience...though I do insist on 16xHQAF on everything I play.

In Oblivion, lowering the actor fade to 66% doesn't produce a noticeable negative gameplay effect, IMO. That gains you about 8 fps in some situations.

Um.. to my knowledge, the bit-tech review shows the GX2 being faster. That is because the GX2 uses higher AA/AF then the X1950XTX most the time espiecally G.R.A.W and Quake4.

edit - increasing memory bandwidth might give a performance increase, but it depends if the card itself is bandwidth hungry. According to most sites, it seems that the X1950XTX is not as bandwidth hungry as some thought, even with settings such as 16x12 6xAA + HDR and 16xHQAF.

Another reason for negligable performance increase could be because the X1950XTX uses the most slowest of all GDDR4 memory (+ looser timings)>

Performance mainly increases come from core clock increases. The X1950XTX is clocked at 650mhz, meaning it will perform similairly to a X1900XTX.

I would say, that the X1950XTX has a ~7 fps lead in most cases against a X1900XTX.

I would love it if an ATI retailer would factory overclock their cards like some of the Nvidia ones do. I kind of see the x1950xt as a 7900gt (wait a sec before you start blasting me)
A stock 7900gt while nothing to snear at has a hidden perc: it's ability to overclock very nicely. Now if we look at an x1950xt the only thing holding this card back now is it's core clock. Granted the returns on overclocking arn't as good as the 7900gt. However the situations are the same they both need to be overclocked to truely shine.

There is no X1950XT from what I heard of.

Simply now its going to go like this:

X1950XTX $449 - R580
X1900XTX (gets replaced by X1950XTX)
X1900XT 512mb $349
X1900XT 256mb $279
X1900GT (gets replaced by X1950pro)
X1950pro $199 - R570
X1800GTO (gets replaced by X1650XT)
X1650XT $149 - R560
X1650pro $99

The X1800XT/XL doesnt exist anymore. (Stopped production as the R580 became more of a success than the R520 and its variants)

There are but they're not cheap. Lets face it -- the x1900 cards are nice but they are hot as crap. So that pretty much negates the ability to OC. So we'd be talking no more than 25-50 mhz core clock unless you're lucky and get one of the cards with a lot of headroom.

MY EVGA 7950GX2 clocks from 500/600 to 600/700 just using Nvidias overdrive function in the control panel.

I can play for hours without any issues or lockups (tried Oblivion and Guild Wars). But I do have a good cooling on my case.

I never did any benchmark to see how better it performs, but it should be a substantial gain as we are talking on 2 GPUs.... 2 x 100

I'm using an Enermax Chakra with a 250mm fan on the side - I have to update my signature :)

I would think that people who buy highend setups would like to play with HDR , AA + AF, but I could be mistaken.

The Inquirer benchmarks put the 1950xtx almost 10%-25% behind the 7950 GTX in every game.

They said once they upped the AF/AA the gap was even greater, which contradicts other reviews.

I don't know who to believe anymore.

Pretty much, from what I read, the 1950XTX is arguably the fastest single core card. But the 7950GX2 is the fastest single slot card.

Yea there are some exceptions to the rule but we are talking all around.
