OK, I'm stuck. I can not figure out which video card to go with. I do not play a lot of newer games but I do play Dark Age of Camelot a lot and enjoy maxing out the settings, also the RvR can be graphics intense. I also enjoy some Counter Strike:Source from time to time and who knows what game will catch my eye in the future. The card I get will need to be a decent card for the next 2-3 years before my Fiance lets me upgrade again.

I am looking at two different cards (from any manufacturer):

ATI x1800xt 512
or
ATI x1900gt 256

Currently the 1800 is beating the 1900 in most tests but it is running off an old core and the drivers are not fully optimized on the 1900 yet. Am I better off having the extra ram on the older chipset or less ram on the newer chipset?

Thank you for your help.
Ian.

It's not just the ram it is the pixel pipes and speed. I say go with the 1800vt The 1900gt would be good if it unlocked some how but I havn't heard of anything on that end.

Just go with the 1800xt if you want to save some money they have 256mb versions also, the performance is about the same if you stay a way from high rez.

Hope this helps.

at stock, 1900gt may not even be able to beat the 1800xt 256mb at best, not sure though

1800xt 512mb may be much better

the x1900 gt,i think suffers from premature drivers right now.
And if u plan on modding it by bios-flashing,then u'll have to flash it to AIW x1900 bios as the x1900 xt has 512mb of ram.
If u can find one,i suggest u get x1800 xt,cause it'll give u performance for the price.
Until the drivers get better,i'd suggest u(or anyone for that matter)stay away from the x1900 gt.

With settings/resolutions/AA/AF/etc. cranked up, the X1800XT seems the better buy (unless you can find the X1900GT for way less).

At lower settings, the X1900GT is fine
It also seems slightly better for newer shader intensive games at less insane settings.
