It might sound good for ATI in the short term. Nvidia spent a lot of time designing the graphics chip for the XBOX, and get very little out of the deal. The deal brought some profit but also let ATI surpassed in the release of the Radeon 9700.

I know Nintendo announced they stopped production of their Game Cube a week ago. So I guess this allowed the door to open up for ATI.
I recommend you re-read that press release. They temporarily halted production until the end of September to clear backed inventory of unsold products. Production will continue afterward.

Proof positive the general populace is retarded.

I wouldn't get hyped up about this announcement just yet. Remember, ATi also scored a deal with Nintendo to supply next generation graphics technology. However, nobody knows what the technology will be used for.

Does anybody have a direct link to the press release?

In some regards an nVidia chipset would be best for consumers because it increases the chances of backward-compatibility with XBOX 1 games. I realize most of the XBOX graphics calls are pretty standard, that's what makes ports so easy, but I was always under the impression that there were a lot of funky nVidia-specific functions for the XBOX chip (though maybe a lot of developers didn't use them).

This may not be a very good thing for ATI. MS is a very difficult and cruel partner/master, Nvidia learned this first hand when they had piles of Xbox chips they couldn't sell, and were about to have to take a very large loss on the ordeal, only to be able to save their hides in arbitration. Console chips have been some of the lowest margin products out there, so if MS tries something similar on ATI, they could very well drive them in to the red.

Maybe nVidia paid MS to sign the deal with ATI. :p

Considering that the xbox was basically a celery700 with a gf4, lets hope this deal yields a better, more efficient design for the xbox than the last one.

but what about nintendo? :frown:

Does this mean they are going to stop making them? like no more gamecube? period?

no, theres a surplus of them at retailers and distributors so they're waiting for those to get sold

no, theres a surplus of them at retailers and distributors so they're waiting for those to get sold

meaning no one's buying them.

Wrong there. nVidia went into the sh!tter when they jumped onto the .13mu bandwagon before anyone was capable of reliably producing anything on that process (except Intel). nVidia is still having a hard time getting 5600/5900/5900U chips out the door while ATi reports having no yield issues with RV350. Some say the NV30/NV35 core was just poorly designed.

So true. Those things need to go the way of the dreamcast soon. Make nintendo a software company.

Which is curious, considering Nintendo is still (barely) #2 globally in console sales, and still #1 in handheld sales.

I thought Gamecube had the best looking games around, except most of their games don't match my palette or my age group. I was almost going to get one just for Resident Evil. But why buy from a company that screwed its fans over? (Capcom, blah!) .

I don't think so...even at its peak 3dfx didn't have near the market penetration that Nvidia has enjoyed for the past few years.

I think it just goes to show that ATI knows the video card business better than most.

20% of Nvidias profits come from the Xbox GPU.

If I recall correctly Xbox has outsold the GC in every region except Japan.

Their whole mess with MS was their fault, their estimates for prices of their Xbox chips was low, when the time came it was costing Nvidia more than they thought it would to fab the Xbox GPUS.
