ATi will be no more...only AMD will exist!

Since the brand isn't worth much there isn't really much harm from dropping it.
There never seems to be any ATi advertising. There is more AMD advertising though.

I'm not sure i believe that site, as i've never heard of it.

But i also wouldn't be surprised if it's true; it makes sense.

worthless? ATI?

It doesn't matter as long as they don't drop the 'Radeon' brand name. The Radeon name is more important from a brand-recognition PoV.

I've noticed a lot of regular, non-techie people refer to their video cards as 'nVidia 6600' or 'Radeon X800'.

I liked the ATI brand name but in the end, "A rose by any other name..." Just produce quality GPU's and people will buy. Not saying you'll have the highest marketshare but you certainly won't fail.

Seriously though, this is either one stupid move or one smart move...

Sig material right there, this could have been an Einstein quote LOL 😛

Now.. I agree that AMD will probably bring alot more popularity to Radeon cards, since dispite Ati having some of the best cards ever, they dont get nowhere near the recognition they should because of their INEXISTENT pr department, which sucks

LOL! AMD easily matches ATI in the suckiness of their PR/marketing teams. They've had the absolute best cpu out there for the past two years, and still no one but enthusiasts have heard of them. Consider that, and then look at the Conroe launch. People are flipping out over Core 2, the motherboards are selling out at $250-300 a pop, and you can't even get hold of the cpu's yet!

ATI is/was worth $4 billion, last time I checked, thats a lot of money.

The brand is worth $4bn, or the company?

Valuable brands.

I'm saying "ATi" is worthless as 3 letters. They aren't particularly well recognised.
AMD is probably slightly more recognised. Therefore it's worth something.

Getting rid of "ATi" isn't really a loss, it's easier to try and push the better known brand name (AMD) than it is to try and push both AMD and ATi.

Consolidates the marketing base as well, they can pool their pre-merger budget and hopefully build the brand better than either of them have in the past. Seriously, they need to get a good marketing director and couple of other talented folks and really bust some good adverts and promotions out there.

Plus, does this mean that Intel is selling mobo's with AMD integrated graphics?!? 😛

Why doesn't AMD turn it into some badge thing that they sell with their computers? Something like viiv or centrino. Most of the buyers don't know what those words mean anyway, they just know it's something else that they get in the box. If they market it well (which I know we are talking about AMD and ATI here) they might come out ok. I would think this would work better for the low end laptop or entry level pc market integrated video packages. For the higher end they could push the Radeon badge as a particular combination of cpu, gpu, and perhaps when the time comes, vpu. It could be a badge package aimed at the gamer section without much chance of losses. Because they are all separate parts they don't have to be sold together. However, to have the Radeon badge they would all have to be present. Anyway just my $.02

AMD generally has a good reputation right now. People know Athlon, people know 64 bit, and people like AMD. Even with Core 2 Duo coming out, most people still think AMD is the more powerful processor. But they also think it's faster because it's 64 bit, and don't realize Intel has had 64 bit for years as well.

ATI generally does not have a good brand reputation. People know nvidia and geforce, and know ati as the slow card, or the card with compatibility problems. I had to argue with some kid for hours that the x800xt I sold him was faster than his geforce 3 by a hell of a lot, and then he had to argue with his friend than an x800xt is a hell of a lot faster than a 9800pro. Stupid people.

Sad to see the ATI name die though, just as it was sad to see the 3dfx and Voodoo names die. Personally, I'd prefer keeping the ATI name over Radeon, but mainly because I've typically referred to the ATI cores as R300 or RV300 or whatever the code name is. Maybe Flipper, maybe Hollywood, maybe Xenos, but I've always related them together with the name ATI. Not to mention that I remember ATI before Radeon existed, and I know that ATI produces more than just radeons.

AMD Live! is their answer to Viiv.
Except it's new and it's AMD which = no marketing.
But then again, I haven't seen much about Viiv either, most stuff still seems to be Centrino.

Well that's to be expected, as VIIV is to HTPC as Centrino is to laptops; VIIV is not a replacement for Centrino, it's a desktop equivalent.

I know.
But adverts are for Centrino. I have never seen a Viiv advert in the UK.
So most stuff is pushing Centrino, which is what I said 🙂
Intel is not marketing its media platforms, but still mobile, and AMD is also not pushing its Live! platform.

Crap.
So it's either Intel/AMD, Intel/NV , AMD/AMD (or is it just AMD?) and AMD/NV

See now AMD is almost in 100% of the combinations!

I see a reason to get rid of ATI as a company, it costs too much to try and run the 2 companies apart. However I see no reason to get rid of the ATI brand. It's been around to long and is will known.

I would consider this a rumor at best.
