ATI vs Nvidia....

with most of the specs for the new line of ATI being disclosed, what do you guys expect performance-wise? Will the new line of ATI cards be able to dethrone the Nvidia 7800 series? I know this is completely speculatory, and I for one don't have the know how to give any opinion based on the specs that were published for the X1800, but perhaps some of you might be able to have a sort of general indication of how the card will perform?
 
They'll be more or less equal; ATI will be better at some things, nVidia will be better at other things.

In other words... it'll be the same as it is now, only with more powerful cards available.
 
I am not gonna lie to you i prefer ati over nvidia for a couple of reasons such as they are more efficent, run cooler, less voltage, and the actual card is smaller. I think ati's new lineup will be very intresting i hope it beats or compete's with the 7800gtx i have to give it to nvidia though there 5 series just plain suxed they are really getting good 6 series was good 7 series is better still they need to work on making there cards smaller and run cooler.
 
Unless ATIs new design is alot more efficient in its design with only 16pipes, its going to be hard to top Nvidia.

well i kinda doubt they actually use the full potential of 16 pipelines.

How do you figure?

7800's are considerably better with power consumption and heat than 6800 series.

7800's blow away ATi's offerings. It isn't like they are equals.

It is fair to criticize an offering for such issues - when the other offering is equal. In this case, you are comparing apples and oranges.

My guess is that X1800 disappoints. Might come close to stock 7800GTX speed, we'll see. But I predict a lot of desperate, whiny ATi fanboys in the next month.
 
even if ati performs better than nvidia, they will still be producing less cards than nvidia does. thus giving nvidia a smoother flow of income than ati, who was forced to cancel a few times already. nvidia canceled their ultra series because they rather sell a ton of weaker units than make only a handful of powerful ones. i dont know why i said all of this.
 
the 7800GT does give better performance, along with Shader Model 3.0, so I think it is worth the extra cash.....but let's stay on topic and try to compare the coming line of cards with the 7800 series

I expect X1800 to kick the crap out of my 7800GT. Then I'll cry and beat myself.

No. I think they will be about even. The 1800 might even have the edge, but who knows. If my card loses, I will walk away calmly. My $345 was well spent.
 
Have to wait and see, but right now I get the feeling that nVidia will have the upper hand, especially as far as overclocking is concerned.
Their cards run fairly cool, and by the time R520 shows up, nVidias foundries will have had plenty of time to tune the process.

You totally missed the point that ATI cards of the same generation have a more efficient design and run cooler. The 9800/9700 cards were faster yet cooler than 5800/5900 cards.

This round belongs to Nvidia although x800's are better with power consumption. Nvidia is still looking good in the next round.

For now we don't know anything ATi hasn't told us, for all we know R520 could be ATi's version of NV30, or it could be a complete revolution.
R300 vs NV30 says nothing of R520 vs G70.
 
I gave up on Nvidia after having the original Geforce DDR, the Geforce 3 Ti300 and Ti500 and after having a Geforce 4. All 3 cards always had some issues with some older 3d games that I still play to this day. I had switched to ATI when the first Radeon 64 DDR came out and have been happy with each ATI upgrade I have had right up to my current X800 XT. I'm sure my game issues have probably been resolved long ago with Nvidia but I am just used to and acustommed to ATI. I have yet to go PCIE (still using an Asus P4P800 Deluxe) and my system plays all the new and old games very well. When I go PCIE (which will be inevitable) I may invest in whatever current Nvidia card is kickass at that time.
 
I dunno but have made one decision. Money is tight and will be for the next 6-9 months. I have decided to sit this round out and let my trusty S754 A64 and 6800GT keep on chugging for the next 12 months. Ill wait for the next round of cards hopefully next summer.
