ATI vs NVIDIA

I remember reading that ATI had better image quality on their cards, i.e. colors look better/richer.

I recently saw this for myself by comparing identical machines, one with Radeon 7000 and one with

GF4MX 128mb. And though anemic the 7000 had better picture/display (I'm not comparing performance

here).

So can anyone tell me if the latest NVIDIA cards (GF5 or GF6 series) have improved in this regard, are

they equivalent to ATI cards?

Thanks

The ATI cards do have better 2D quality that I have noticed, 3D ATI seems to be more towards the cooler colors then Nvida making the graphics are brighter and more crisp.

I gaurentee you, that if you compared a 6600GT, to your 7000, you'd prolly see a difference 😉 I can't notice a difference between my old 5700u, and my new 9700p, they both work fine (cept the Radeon kicks ACE in games 🙂)

Yeah , the desktop looked better on the Radeon. The game I think looked better too, kind of like it had

AA, smoother colors maybe. ( I know, it sounds weird)

Also the GF4MX machines generally gave me eyestrain, is that something I should worry about?

So the newer Nvidia cards have equivalent picture quality? Anybody else want to comment ?

You are comparing to old cards that have nothing to do with the picture quality of this or last generation video cards.

Newer decent quaity Nvidia cards should be just fine. I have absolutely no complaints with my BFG 5900XT or BFG 6800GT.

im sure this is irrelevant, but for macs, ATI cards have a much better reputation for dvd playback quality than nvidia.

i have a radeon 9800 pro, amazing graphics on everything -- dvds and games

its more than a year old but it still has a lot of life left in it. i'll wait for the next generation of ati cards to show up before i upgrade.

When it comes to 3D quality the texture filters, and especially optimizations thereof, play the major role.

For newer card generations, ATI has been caught lying about their trilinear filters (I think it's on Tom's), in that it wouldn't give you raw (= unoptimizaed, slower but better quality) trilinear texture filters even when you select them.

This ia very complex issue. If you need the performance you cannot do perfect texture filtering and when the tradeoffs kick in optinions follow quickly.

As a note : When I upgraded from my 9700 Pro to my 6800 GT, I felt the colors were noticeably less vibrant; especially on the desktop. It left me a bit disappointed for a while; but i'm used to it now.

So I'd say the same generally holds true, but not to nearly as big of an extent as before.

did you play around with digital vibrance control? Did the trick for me!

THERE SO CLOSE NOW ITS YOUR DECISION NVIDIA HAS Shader 3.0 AND ATI Doen't there both nice cards

Amen to that! However SM3.0 has yet to be really used 🙁 as no game s natively written for it. They all expand on 9.0 effectively using 9.0B. They leave out displacement mapping and what not.

saw an article and review that had pictures of the 6800 and x800 series next to each other and the ATI looked "smoother" in some of the pictures.

I think both cards are great but i'll be going with a 6800 Ultra

I also went from 9700 Pro --> 6800GT and was bummed re: image quality difference initially , especially in my favorite game NWN. But I like the card overall quite a bit.

Far cry has just introduced shader 3.0 so its useable now. earlier games didn,t have but I think you can update them not sure

Far Cry is the only one that supports it, but not natively. So therefore it has no support for displacement mapping, and some of the features that seperate 3.0 from 2.0b.

As for IQ, there is no difference, i dont know what you guys are talking about. You probably have screwed up drivers. The IQ in the Geforce 6 series is as good the Radeons IQ. The series that had the problem is the FX series.
