ATI vs. Nvidia

1st off i don't want this thread turning into a war, all im looking for are the facts, and/or your personal experience and what you like best and why.

i will be building a new computer in the near future, i was wondering what card i should go with

please recomend brand names too.

thanks

Maybe you should, like, do some research instead of posting a thread that has about a 90% chance of degrading into a flamewar. There are usually several threads per week (if not per day) asking the same questions.

First you may wanna research PCIe versus AGP, you may need to decide which way you wanna go.

Second, you'll need to come up with a budget so peeps can make a resonable suggestion.

Third, seems to me some anitcipated cards, like the 6600GT (AGP flavor), aren't out yet but may be by the time you're ready to build. I see peeps recommending them now even though no one actually has one (at least to my knowledge). Perhaps we'll have some solid info on these new cards b4 you build.

Lastly, some indication of what type of games you play may make a diff. Are you an RTS or FPS player? Doom 3 or HL2? Some say if you're a Doom 3 type that nVidia w/b the best cuz their GL ability is better. Some think HL2 will be best played by an ATI.

Here's hoping this doesn't turn into a flame war (BTW, I've got a mix of ATI and nVidia cards in my systems)

I like nvidia (I've had many of both) purely from the driver standpoint. ATI seems to have better IQ to me, but my 6800 suits me just fine 🙂

Edit: I'm not loyal to either company because they simply make products and I buy the best product for the money.

there are many benchmarking comparisons between nvidia and ati
use ye old search function

hard to get a non bias answer here...
they both perform well and not as well, depends what you will be using it for

BriGy86: DO NOT BUY THAT, it has 128bit memory, basicly half of what a 9800Pro is. Do yourself the favor and spend the extra $30 for the real one.

i should be looking for 256 bit memory then?

thank you Fern, here is the card i am looking at right now

it looks like a good price.

the only games i have right now are the demo for UT2004 and soldier of fortune 2, i am mostly in to 1st person shooters, but i am no where near what you would call your average gamer.

i am looking for about $230 max

The card you posted is 128 bit card, the real 9800 pro is a 256 bit card. Big difference in performance. The "Devil's" in the details.

At that price point ($230) you have several options in play: 9800 pro, 6600GT (the agp version is thought to be coming soon) and maybe even a regular 6800 (if the price drops a bit in th near future).

When are going to start purchasing parts? Is PCIe in the mix?

ATI is the best all around. The fact that according to a thread i read here, Nvidia has horrible driver support for their cards (they failed almost every WHQL test). They are also loud, use more power and have horrible 2D. ATI has much higher standards than nVidia when it comes to some chump making their cards, nvidia will sell their chips to almost anyone. ATI also supports much more features than nvidia when it comes to improving image quality. My 9800SE (modded into 9800 pro, took 2 RMAs untill i got one that would take) looks awesome when compared to my friends Geforce3, mainly because of TRUform and other revolutionary technologies made possible through ATI.

No, its not a pro and it still has 128bit.

If you're looking for a 9800 pro, get one with 128MB of ram, and 256 bit interface.

i've been looking for a while i just need money to pay for the thing, currently i have just a case keyboard, HDD, mouse floppy and an old CD and zip drive (i got for free) ill be getting a DVD-RW though

welcome to two generations ago? 😕 besides, who cares are bout WHQL, none of my drivers are WHQL approved and work just fine. i am surprised there is someone actually using gimmick feature like TRUform

should i just go with the ATI brand?

I went through all this about 6 months ago (hunting for a 9800 pro). If you can be a bit patient, you'll find one at a good price. I ended up with a BBA card for $200. I chose it because the waranty was important to me. The BBA (built by ATI) card came with a 3 yr warranty, while the others did not.

Just keep checking with pricegrabber or something similar, the Hot Deals section and sales by Best Buy etc (where I got my card on sale). I'm guessing as the production/supply of the new generation cards increases, we'll sell more sales of the 9800 pro.
