...simply, because they are different architectures. If you are just looking at clockspeeds when comparing ATi to nVidia, you are comparing apples to oranges.

Even thouogh you really cant list all the cards in order by performance, I'll give a rough heiarchy:
6800u, x800p, 9800xt, 9800p, 5900xt, 5700u, 9600xt. This does vary depending upon the game in which you bench them on. Especially when comparing the 5700u and 9600xt.

The 9800xt is better due to having more pipelines, a better archetecture, better iq, higher clocks, more memory bandwidth, etc, etc, etc...

Check xbitlabs's Summer Roundup for comparative numbers. Anyway, what's the point of knowing how all of those stack up? Don't you have a single price point you're aiming for, or are you going to buy one at each range (low, mid, high)?

9800XT: 8 pixel pipelines. 5700U: 4.
9800XT: 256-bit memory bus width. 5700U: 128-bit.

So remember to multiply all of the 9800XT's numbers by two to see how it theoretically compares to a 5700U.

The 9800 Pro has 8 pixel pipelines in an 8x1 array (if you will). The 5700U has 4 pixel pipelines in a IIRC 2x2 array. The 6800Ultra has 16 pixel pipelines that can operate in 16x1, 8x2, or 32x0 array.

The 9800Pro has a 256bit data width, the 5700Ultra has 128bit. The 6800U has 256bit.

Yes the 9800Pro has slower clock speeds, however with all the highend stuff it has clockspeed doesn't do as much. The increased number of pixel pipelines and increased data width helps tremendously.

Also they are completely different technologies.

I can go deaper if need be, but it really takes a long time.

This thread is a flame war waiting to happen, CHANGE THE NAME to "Why is one card faster" with a sub head of the card names.

FYI, you don't have four pixel pipelines with a 2x2 array, you have two pipelines with two texturing units each. The first number indicates pipelines, meaning pixels able to be drawn per clock; the second indicates the number of texture accesses you can perform per pipeline per clock.

The 5700U is supposed to be either 4x1 when single-texturing or 2x2 when multitexturing, but who knows at this point.
