ATI vs. NVidia / AMD vs. Intel

It seems like there are no clear winners with either video card or cpu / mobo choices right now.

On the video card side, ATI has a really fast option for apps with pixel shader 2.0 and it's possible that next gen games might need the bandwidth that native pci-e will offer. But nVidia's best performs on par or better than ATI's and pixel shader 3 support may speed things up with next-gen games (maybe not, who knows). So far, it seems like the bridge to pci-e is plenty fast for nVidia as well.

On the CPU / Mobo side, Intel has offered some interesting new technologies (pci-e, ncq, etc) that AMD doesn't yet offer, but the Athlon 64 (especially FX line) is really fastest of the fast for gaming (and once 64 bit windows + drivers that are mature come out, there will be a speed bump for nothing).

So once again, there are two good choices with no clear winner.

Which would you buy right now?

Video: ATI X800 or nVidia 6800 Ultra (or Ultra Extreme)
CPU: Intel Prescott or AMD 64 (you can also argue P4 EE vs 64 FX)

Let the discussion begin!

The discussions have been conducted ad nauseam already, we don't need another 😉

I agree on the video cards that they are close, but I think that the Athlon64 has shown its strength over the P4 in everything but encoding, end then it depends on the software you are using. AMD wins some and the P4 wins some. There was a thread on this before, do a search.

Personally I would wait for nForce4 + 939 A64, combined with 6800 GT

Agreed. Add some of that nice XL Corsair RAM and you will be laughing all the time until Doom 3 comes out - then you will be too busy gaming 😀.

nForce 4 detailing here. Please note this is the Inquirer - so take a salt grinder with you
