ATI TV Wonder + Windows 2000 = fine, add DX9.0a = trouble

I'm using v7.1 and the video is scrambled after installing DirectX 9.0a from Windows Update. I see ATI has v7.6 beta for Windows XP that was released in June 2002. Does that work with DX9?

EDIT: Reinstalling the ATI software/drivers worked.

If your video card doesn't use dx9 why install it?
